I am in the market for a new bike, and i have been lookin at an RC51. I don't really know much about the RC51 of V-twins. Can someone tell me some good and bad things about RC51

the RC is a UNIQUE machine...

Great use-able torque, lots of fun, lots of mods, not every squid has one (and those that do, crash them quick) its different than most of the I-4's running around...

Drawbacks are that it hasn't had any upgrading since '02, the bike can be heavy and tough to turn in stock trim, the newer 1k's can hand you your ass on the straights, a bit unforgiving on newbies with poor throttle control...

A really fun bike but not for the inexperienced.

Gsxr 750. What other bikes have you rode
having owned a 2001 750 i believe i can give an honest opinion between the 2...the gsxr is more comfortable to ride longer distances compared to the rc,the seat on the rc is alot firmer(honestly doesnt make much diff to me)motor wise(for the street)the rc wins hands down, the gsxr is by all concerns a peaky motor, anything below 9500rpm's and its anemic, the rc on the other hand pulls like a freight train just about anywhere, what you give up on top end with the rc is easily made up with a mid range hit that'll keep you smiling!not to mention a good pair of cans and a custom map!!!!:rockon stock for stock(again on the street)the rc's got better legs than the gsxr, mine always bottomed out when ridden hard, not so on the rc.draw back is that you feel every bump and crack in the road, yes its kinda harsh, but stability wise the rc's a rock.the gsxr tends to move around alot more the faster you go.brakes wise the gsxr has a wooden feel, not alot of anything, the rc by far has better stock binders with better feel and power.weight wise my 750,bone stock weighed in at 420 wet,my rc stock weighed in at 480 wet.the rc hides its weight really well but when the turns get tighter youll know its there, all of it!the rc tends to run at higher temps then the gsxr(thats one thing i miss about the zook)you wont win many drag races and the rc is a poor choice for a stunt bike. bike for bike, equal mod for mod a gsxr 750(let alone a 600)with equal riders will drop an rc like a bad habit.the rc's not a bike for everyone, its an aquired taste thats for sure.its not a perfect bike, but with time and money im sure ill enjoy mine for years to come:twocents

That is probably the most honest & accurate review I have read about an RC.

It is very refreshing to see someone tell the whole unbiased truth.

Cheers!

It all started for me with a 98 Superhawk. I had ridden a couple I4's before my first twin. One test ride on the Superhawk and I was hooked on the V2's. I rode my SH for 2 or 3 years whlle the RC51 was introduced, always drooling and wishing I could upgrade. I mean, wow, basicly the same bike as the SH but with the right frame, better suspension, monster motor, not to mention it's a "race" bike, and that sound!!! How cool!:rockon Anyway I don't have much experience on my RC51 yet, but from what I have seen , and experienced with my RC.....I will keep this one for a very long time.

Have had mine for 3 weeks. Previous ride was a zx9r. Stinky fast top end.
Really comfortable. But you know what. I'm like a little kid when I fire up the RC in the morning. Much more demandinfg motorcycle but oh my God it is awsome!!!!!!!!

my 2

Took my RC (that I got last weekend 01') out for a good ride today and it was very interesting, not at all what I expected. I've had a few suzuki's, and recently got a 996s. In my opinion the Honda is dead stable with good stock suspension and better brakes than some race bikes I've owned. Stock, the motor seems lazy with more top end than my Duc. Definatly needs some teeth on the rear sproket. The clutch is....well not that good (though I have been using a dry clutch) real jerky, not a stoplight drag racer(just like everyone said). The feul injection (stock) is extremley snatchy on/off throttle. The seating posiotion is upright for me, but the pegs are high enough. overall I'm real happy with my purchase and have ordered some new pipes ect.

An RC51 is uncomfortable bike to ride. If you ride it slowly, it will overheat. It's a lousy street bike, frankly. This should not come as a surprise - it was designed to win races on the track, and what made it good on the track makes it not good on the street for most people.

Also, the RC51's day has passed. It has not been updated since 2002. It's heavy and it's down on peak power compared to 2006 literbikes.

So, from a comfort and numbers standpoint, the RC51 does not stack up well.

However, as the years have passed, the RC51 has become something of a cult bike - people love it subjectively and irrationally because they love the sound, the torque and the handling of a purpose-built track bike.

I love my RC51 for reasons listed above. It's built like a tank - very rigid frame, very high quality. Extremely stable at ridiculous speeds. It also responds incredibly well to a few simple mods. Anyone riding a stock RC51 doesn't know what they're missing, and how good a bike they could be riding.

I beg to differ on the comfort factor. I use my RC51 as my only mode of transportation, and with a Sargent seat is not bad around town. Yes, you WILL feel every bump in the road, and it WILL overheat in 100F stop and go traffic. And I completely agree with the rest of what you said in it being behind the curve compared to the new '06s.

But this thing has soul, and oh-so-addicting torque everywhere. Besides, there is something to be said for unique bikes with cult followings. . . :rockon

Does anyone but me get that feeling when the hair on your arms and neck stand up at the sight and sound of an RC51 at full boil in 4th, then 5th, then 6th gear? Maybe I'm obsessed, :wacky but there is no other bike made that i would be on at the moment.

Track days and canyons sunday a.m.

Thats all I need...I Love this bike. I've had a few gsxrs, a zx7r (muzzy built), and a Triumph Daytona t959. This RC isn't the fastest...but I love cornering with it. I don't like the trans. and I'm told I should junk the rear shock. Was actually scraping my kickstand(yes it was up) at streets of Willow...I don't care that I don't have the newest coolest trickest machine out there. What I need for my therapy sessions (RIDES) this bike gives me.

As do I on both statements.

A buddy and I run 500 mile trips every Sunday to Shenendoah Mountain (weather permitting) and even the stock seat doesn't bother me until circa 400 miles.

I run the RC to work every day(again weather pemitting (I ride the 'inclimate weather' bike otherwise)). Love it. Comfort is fine IMO.

I got that feeling today on a little solo ride. The sounds the twin makes with aftermarket pipes is intoxicating. Now toss in a great chassis and brakes and I'm in heaven.:notworthy Geez, I sound like Coleman! Super cool chit!:woot:
