Slow start for alot of people. The CRT bikes look pitiful and Hayden looks strong. Don't expect him that far up the list when the weekend is over but it's gotta give him some much needed confidence.

As expected, Casey Stoner took first blood of the 2012 MotoGP season, the Repsol Honda rider staging a late charge to set the fastest lap of the session. Stoner dislodged Jorge Lorenzo from top spot, the Factory Yamaha rider having shown a very strong pace throughout. Third fastest was Nicky Hayden, the factory Ducati man just under half a second off the pace of Stoner, an impressive showing by the American.
Ben Spies, who had led much of the session, found himself demoted to 4th by the end, the factory Yamaha rider just over a tenth quicker than the second Repsol Honda carrying Dani Pedrosa. Cal Crutchlow of the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team was first of the satellite riders, just ahead of San Carlo Gresini's Alvaro Bautista, while Crutchlow's teammate Andrea Dovizioso ended the session in 8th. Pramac's Hector Barbera finished the session as 9th fastest, ahead of Valentino Rossi on the second factory Ducati. Rossi ended the day nearly a second behind teammate Hayden.
Randy de Puniet won the war of the CRTs, the Power Electronics Aspar rider just edging Colin Edwards on the Suter BMW. De Puniet ended the day 3.5 seconds off the time of Stoner, and a second behind the last factory prototype, the LCR Honda of Stefan Bradl.

Crutchlow is one of the riders that surprises me. I thought Dovi would eat him alive.

Look for the Tech3 bikes to slowly slide back throughout the year though as the factory bikes get the updates first. Right now I would guess the gap between customer and factory is fairly small but will grow.

After watching more of the FP's, I LOVE the sound of the Moto3 bikes. Like Nick and Gavin said, it's very much like a MX/SX Lites sound and that's great. I know the purists hate the death of 2 smokers but it was time to move on and I like it (so far).

The other upgrade is the "bookmarks" available on the archived vids. Kinda a cool little feature to mark the highlights of the event if you wish to see them. At least they are trying to give you more for your money.

I agree, it was time to move on and the four stroke 250s do sound cool!

I am trying to remember the context, but does anyone recall summer 2011 when Rossi, in a press conference, made a joke about Melandri and the Ducati?

It was something about what Melandri had said about Rossi going to Ducati. Rossi made a joke about Melandri being his manager,

In hindsight, a very arrogant statement. I wonder if Vale would take it back if he could.

sure seems like he painted himself into a corner...

it also says just how good of a rider Hayden is...

and how badly he underestimated the talents of Stoner...
