Hey guys, I've been poking my face around here the last few weeks. As you can see from my post numbers I was somewhere else (RC51). Well, now that i'm dong better and the RC51 is.....err... doing 6FT under after eating a Buick in the twisty stuff....I'm ready to buy and ride ride ride. CycleCat is herr in my town about 10 minutes from me !!! (that could hurt ! :) ) Looks like a 2002 RED 998 has my name on it for just over $10K...
I have read the last 10 pages in Superbike section and here but promise, that I will end up asking one Milllion questions....like.....
are my rockers flaking?, why does maintenance cost so much?, why am i having electrical gremlins?, why won't my bike start?, why are there so many clips and bolts?, holy crap it costs how much to replace that?, why is it so hard to adjust the preload on the Ohlins shock?. tune-up every 6K not 20K:woot:?,

hope all is going well for everbody here.....and don't eat a Buick - you will lose ....

There is some good news for you...

1. it's a Testastretta motor so you won't have a rocker problem

2. they don't really require any more maintenance (a 998 anyway) than most everything else

3. the electrics are actually pretty solid, mine hasn't blinked once since new

4. See number three

5. you are obviously coming off a Japanese bike when you mention clips and bolts because once you open the Ducati and see how clean and easy it is to work on, you will ask yourself why Japanese bikes have twelve miles of hoses, fittings connectors, brackets and general garbage the Ducati doesn't, oh yeah you will also be able to have full access to the motor in about ten seconds instead of ten minutes.

6. I don't think parts pricing is too bad, but then the only parts I have had to buy was due to a low side.

7. Adjust the preload once, maybe.

8. I guess you are referring to a valve adjustment check since there is no such thing as a tune up. If set right you will probably still be in spec. and not need any adjustments until every 12k.

Most people that dis these things do it from ignorance and it is some justification as to why they don't have one. There were some years that had some real problems, the the newer stuff overall is quite good.
