If you've ever tried navigating through BMW iDrive system on their cars, then you know that you better be parked and out of the way to simply change stations on the damn thing.....it was almost designed to make you feel like a 98 year old grandma trying to program a VCR

well, BMW feels that BMW car owners shouldn't be the only ones suffering with this shit.... so! its now on their to Motorcycles too!!

iDrive comes to motorcycles - Hell For Leather

The K1600LT is supposed to be their new top of the line offering and will be packed full with such gadgets.
Frankly I prefer the current command layout: one button for ESA, one for heated grips, another for the info screen... but again with additional electronics creeping in you'll end up having handlebar controls looking like the main control panel from the Space Shuttle so you need to find a solution.
This may not be the best but what are the alternatives? Until this year the Kawasaki flagship still required you to take your hands off the bars to access the info screen and most bikes won't go beyond the usual basic functions. At least BMW is trying.

True Story...
When I was a college student I commuted on the 500 Bel-0-Ceptor... in the bike
parking lot a fellow student wanted to know what that long lever was on the
side of the Triumph... I explained that was a kick starter... he had no idea...

When I did the BMW performance driving school (a birthday gift from my girl last year :rockon), during some sessions we had to turn the stability and traction control off, the instructor spent at least 30 seconds walking us all thru the process using idrive (via walkie-talkies) IMO its so complicated that youll probably get it all figured out right about the time you decide to sell the car. :wacky

I can't understand how ANYONE cannot figure out iDrive? Seriously! You can change your audio input on the wheel and scroll your stations on the wheel. Navigation is basic and I'm not sure what else you would use it for on a regular basis. If u have an ///M model, u just set your specs and then turn the M mode on via the wheel.

Firest generation iDrive was no complicated, but the user interface was slow, ugly and laggy.

The new iDrive that comes on 2009+ BMWs is nothing short of fantastic. It beats any other control system I ever saw while stilll letting you do a ton of things old fashioned way (via buttons). BMW nav in the new gen iDrive puts TomTom and Garmin to shame.

New iDrive = ROCKS. :rockon :rockon :rockon

Said that .. not sure if iDrive belongs on a bike.

ive driven a new 7 series (not mine) and the iDrive is much improved over the original and the ones that followed....but its still a joke to navigate compared to others. You cant do anything while on the go...you better change whatever settings you want while still in your driveway.

yes, you can "program" the thing so that 1 button has all your setting...but god forbid you might want to change a mirror and save that as a new setting and not dunk the car into a lake while at it.

but then again its all just personal opinion, and if you give anyone enough time to get used to something it becomes a moot point how hard it might be to others.

that doesn change how stupid i think it is that theyre putting this on a bike.....then again, theyre probably bored and why not throw that in.
