Are there still two different oil filters? Changes to the crankcase and oil pressure prompted a new oil filter in 2002, but now it seems there is one filter number only. Is this true?

You are correct. Out of curiosity I have asked a friend who runs a Honda dealership and he confirmed the old SPY-SP1 oil filter has been discontinued and has been replaced by the "universal" type.
There are still stocks of the old filters available but these won't be replenished and dealers have been instructed to order the new one when they need to restock.

Purolator PL14610 or PL14612. Works excellent. 30,000 miles on my 2002. 0 problems.

K&N has a nice hex and a safetey wire hole
