Re: Melting frames @ the Dragon (dj_wawa)

it wouldnt be long before they use cameras and cops every 2 miles...

Squids are not the only ones who give a bad name after all...

No, no, no...That's not the frame. It was the T-1000 making it's escape! you know, from Terminator 2!

I live in NC and I've never been to the Gap. Thanks Janis for reminding me why I don't care if I ever get there.

I'd like to go someday too, but never have the time. Things like this make it far less likely. Every day like described is another step (or three) closer to ever lower speed limits, incresed enforcement, or the banning of bikes altogether.

Pictures of these morons ought to be publicly posted and labeled something like "The In-Over-Their-Heads Gang".

Aluminum melts at over 1200 degrees F.

If that fire was hot enough to melt the frame, the road would be on fire too, right?

Re: Melting frames @ the Dragon (Dave)

the dragon will be ruined for most of the summer now

Re: Melting frames @ the Dragon (rc51crazy)

the dragon was ruined years ago...
I absolutely love the road, but I stay away now because its a cop and squidfest every freakin weekend there. things have gotten way out of hand, there was even a shooting (with a rider pulling the trigger) a few years back.....oh well it was fun till all the squids found it and the cops followed them

There's a freakin website devoted to this road? Yup, it's over.

Several sites dedicated to Deal's Gap.

I've never been there, but I check the photos at http://www.killboy.com on a regular basis.

I'm calling BS on that melting frame thing as well. There is no way that fire could get hot enough to melt AL, no way. The whole bike would had been melted already by the time the AL started to go at those temps, right? The can wouold be gobe already, the plastics, tires....1200F radiates a tons of heat.
G
So what was it?

People say it was definitely metallic when it's cooled they had to scrape it off the pavement.

Perhaps some other metalic part of the bike?

Bottom line, it was some kind of liquid metal.

Re: (jbraslins)

I love it when "people say"...Since they always tell the truth & know what they're talking about. Tin, Lead and Zinc are the only metals that will melt below 1000 F. Maybe the guy had too many wheel weights, or had filled his clip ons with lead shot, or both, we don't know. And that's the point, we don't know.

Re: (number_nine)

I visited the Gap last April. Went mid week hardly a soul around made several runs without any traffic at all. I will say that I did find several other roads in the area that were almost as much fun so maybe people just need to fan out a bit.
The silver stuff is most likely melted fake tiger fur from his fairings!

Probably a combination of an overheated engine, burning oil, & ignitied fuel to cause that frame (?) to melt. You'll be surprised how quickly temps can get to 1200F+ when you factor several scenarios.

Re: Melting frames @ the Dragon (Dave)

Not neccessarily. Seen a car burn to the ground and the road was fine other than a big ass burn spot. That aluminum could had been the engine side cover melted. Could had been part of the flrame also. Drsus, that can looks like a stainless can and its melt point is MUCH higher than aluminums. Alunimun melts at 1220F. Different alloys can either be higher or lower depending on the added metals. STainless steel melts at about 2800F also depending on makeup. The fire could had been hot enough in a small area to actually melt any aluminum. A pic of the side that was on teh ground would be a thing to see.

Yeah, I heard that bikes burn up there on the Cherahola Skyway every weekend. The streets are covered with molten something.

And those damn cops...they're everywhere.
Speed cameras, helicopters, even cops disguised as cows and deer on the Foothills Parkway, I heard....every weekend.

And those squids...they're dying up there left and f'g right. You can't even make a complete pass without riding by some dead guy on a furred-out 'busa.

And those freakin' websites...
What are Darryl, Ron, Nancy and others thinking? They had the nerve to send me a DVD last week of those damn motorcycles rippin' up the Gap. Who the phuck do these people think they are?

And those shootings...it's just so dangerous up there these days. Those bikers are just ruining the place with their guns and their motorcycles and their ...websites... and molten aluminum all over the roads...

What is this world coming to? Is the sky falling?

Quick...let's all boycott the Gap for the rest of the year. You guys get the word out, and I'll go see if the boycott is working...next weekend...with 15 of my buddies.

Every year the end of Deal's Gap is predicted, just like the Bears in the stock market that have predicted 10 of the last 2 market crashes. And every year, it just gets better and better. It's true - it may someday come to an end. But that is not going to stop me from enjoying it in the short run.

I say do your part and start avoiding the place now...my weekends in the United States are few and far between these days, so if you guys could just get that boycott thing going...

take care,
Jeff.
