Need help with installing floating disc buttons

I've done a google search, and the only place I can find "floating disc buttons" is at Motowheels. I have nothing against Motowheels, but I wanted to shop around and see what else was availible. If anyone knows of other "floating disc buttons" (i.e. STM) point me in a direction please. Thanks...

Re: locating floating disc buttons (Dutch900)

I had STM buttons on my first bike. Very nice. I now use the ones from Motowheels. They're not as purdy, but look well made.

STM doesn't offer them anymore, so if you can find them, cool.

Mine were the STM 035MG002 buttons.

Dutch900... you turd-ball.
You must have picked up one of the last sets of buttons that Corse Meccanica had.

I ordered a set from Flat-out. They have (had) four other sets.

If anyone else wants some.... ya' better get on it.

STM quit making them because they were not a big money maker.

Re: (tricklidz1)

Just a heads-up.... Rob (dutch900) has been in touch with me on installing the STM floater buttons. Seems he's having a hard time getting the old buttons out of his 900 with the 11/32 bit like I had suggested. I told him to go up to a 3/8 bit. I'm not sure why it's not working for him, but there is enough clear space that the 3/8 should do the job and not hit the rotor material.
Sounded like he was too frustrated to work on it more today
.... we'll have to wait until the AM to hear how things turned out.

I feel bad it's been such a PITA, Rob. I hope the 3/8 works.

Re: locating floating disc buttons (Dutch900)

If you want floating discs, talk to (or IM) Norm. He has a very interesting method for making stock discs into floaters. It involves some wood, a large hammer and lots of courage.

Re: locating floating disc buttons (TnDuc)

Been there, done that, TnDuc. It does work... and it's free.

But, you can get more chicks with the STM buttons.

Re: (FlatOut Motorcycles)

i used a 4 1/2 inch grinder to remove the ss buttons on my rotors (being real careful) and was done with the whole job in one and a half hours. the hammer idea is not the first method i would use to accomplish this task.

Re: locating floating disc buttons (Mental998)

Okay, here is the skivvie. I drilled out the old button with a 11/32" drill bit and made a "0". Darn rivet is out but the rest of the button is still there. So, Mental suggested going to a 3/8" bit. Did that too...same thing, just a bigger hole in the button.
You can still see a small lip to the old button head. Do I need to go to a 13/32" bit? Pretty soon I will be able to stick my "woo-woo" through the hole.
What is the deal? Are the stock button "rivet" on a '95 900 larger in diameter or what????
What do I need to do to persuade the old button out? (I was hoping to do this mod with the front wheel in place.)

Daaaaaaamn...

Can you post some pics?

EDIT: Here's a pic of an STM button. This will show how much room you have to play with.

That's inches.

Thanks Layne, that is a good thought also. I have an idea of how much I can mess with.

Re: locating floating disc buttons (Mental998)

here is how I installed the floating rotor pins on my bikes and my buddies bikes..

First remove your front wheel and tire..

take off your rotors

lay your rotors flat on a piece of plywood and get a good drill bit(you want the bit to be just a little bigger than the center of the hole.. the trick is that it is like a rivet, you want to just drill through a little and then they will come apart).. preferably carbite bit.. It is important that you keep the rotors as flat as possible while drilling you do not want to bend your inner carrier..

Here is a pic of me doing my buddies 03 R6

be careful the pins get really hot as you can see they are burning the plywood.. Do not use a screwdriver and hammer as you may damage your inner rotor carrier if you do not know what you are doing.. Just let the drill do the work..

Here is a finished pic of my buddies 03 R6 I did for him

Here is a pic of my 01 R6 that I installed pins on..

and here is my 996SPS that I first gold plated my inner rotor carrier
for a little bling bling.. LOL and installed some gold anodized pins...

If you want you can also get some high temp paint and paint your inner carrier before installing the pins..

If you need any other help just let me know

Take it easy
Don
