to make a long story short : I am a 22 year old computer science major in my last semester of school... i enjoy web design the most out of a lot of the things ive picked up over the years. I own a 2000 996 that ive put a ton of time/money into... My friend Jeff owns a motorcycle apparel shop and he recently got a ducati franchise. Well, he hired me to do the site for his business... nothing major just a new design/layout in two phases: phase 1 redesign and phase 2 shopping cart implementation.

I am currently at 75% completion on the new site and id really like to have speedzilla's opinion on what ive done so far. I am open to all suggestions in good taste.

here goes: as you can see he was in desperate need of a change to his site and i think ive at least made an improvement

TL,

Nice work. A vastly superior product.
Simple & quick to load.

Well done

I have been wondering when the site might get a renovation. The new version is far improved on the old. The old site is more of a web page than a web site anyway. The pictures could be improved upon but the layout and graphics are very good. Keep up the good work.

I was just there a few days ago and saw the new dyno and a full showroom. Coming along nicely...

Looks good! Quick, simple (in a good way!), and clean...

Might I suggest:

Considerably more professionally done. The back grounds look great, along with the entry to the whole site. Allow for more digitals of the assoc., bikes, make it some what interactive if possible? Have like a "riding club" sign up or a mailing list of some sorts? Tell ya what, next time down in Akron, I'm stopping buy! I like the leather Ducati suit!!! Can you get any Speedzilla pals a discount? Nice job!!

Well, let me speak on behalf of those of us with old computers...

I'm using Windows 98 and IE 5, and I'm stuck in Dial-Up Hell.

When I click onto the new link, I get only the front page. There are no links to anything, other than two pictures of the showroom (two extremely huge, slow-loading pictures). So for me, the new site is useless. The "old" one works fine.

I don't know if it's just my particular computer, or if this will affect everyone with older equipment...

Just thought you should know.

Re: Guys Please Give Me an Honest Opinion (AZ Scott)

you propably need Java plug-in Scott, i had complains with my site after people not been able to see it because of java conflicts so the better option for our friend above is to use a flash navigation or just plain HTML...

you did a good job, easy to navagate around. nice work.

I'm thrilled that Jeff is getting this project up and running - nice looking site.

However, the main text window needs some work. I'm on Win-XP and MSIE 6 and the text is not scrolling or resizing. Without drag-selecting it I cannot read past "we stock and sell high"..

Not too keen on the blue box on a black background look. Doesn't seem to flow visually.

I like the dropdowns - nice for easy navigation.

EDIT: I just re-checked and the text issue is either fixed or I was having a mental aberration. Looking great. The style is nice - text content is probably more Jeff's call and knowing him he's definitely keen to focus on the Ducati (exclusively I'm sure if he could work that). I say keep this ALL Ducati, that purity of vision works well for me.

TL0996,
I like it !, but you mention that your mission is simply Ducati, then also say that you will provide parts and service for other brands. There are no pictures of other bikes/brands in the page either. I think you should revise the text so it brightens your desire to service the other non Ducati brands, drop the "simply Ducati", and write something more general, then write that it is Ducati authorized dealer.
The page looks good and neat artwise.

Re: Guys Please Give Me an Honest Opinion (TL0996)

I like the new site much better. You have done a nice job. One note to pass along to Jeff is to continue to post pictures of actual inventory, which is on the new site already, but needs to be kept current as bikes sell. I know this is a bit of a PITA to maintain, but there is a whole world of people out there and somebody might know somebody who is looking for what he has in stock. I hate lame sites that show what Ducati makes for 04 or 05 when you click on inventory. Jeff might also want to a special tab under bikes and if he wants to offer some blowout deal on certain bikes it can be viewed there. I feel like the more I can actually see into an individual shop, the more likely I am to buy from them. Example, if under helmets you had some photos of all the Suomy helmets Jeff has in stock, say once a month, that would prompt me to at least call and see if my size is available on a helmet I like. Just saying we sell Suomy, Arai, etc. doesn't let me "look" into what you have. Again more site upkeep, which takes time, but I like to go to a site and see changes, it makes me want to visit often and see what's new

I am currently frustrated going to KTM dealer web sites trying to find old new bike specials, most are done poorly, if I had the time to call all of them I wouldn't have time to work.

Much superior to the old site. I'd suggest that you experiment with substituting shades of gray for the blue box as I agree with Bill above that the blue is incongruous. Also the color showroom pic should balance the color Fila 999 background so I'd also experiment moving them so they are across form each other for visual balance.

Re: (chrisk)

Johnny...I think the distinction is that while their mission (as in mission statement) is to sell and service Ducatis, they also want to advertise themselves as being happy to service other makes, too. In other words, not a motorcycle shop that caters to all brands including Ducati, but a Ducati shop that can service other brands as well.

Re: Guys Please Give Me an Honest Opinion (TL0996)

there's a significant item on the new site i think you should do away with. the little "dynamic D" ducati logo is a link to ducati-north-america. i think it's a mistake to have a link on your first page directing a surfer away from your site. i'd say keep the logo but leave the link for the links page.

Ditto. I get on DaveR about that all the time. (and since my opinion carries so much weight, I'm sure he'll get right on it.
)

Nice looking site.

Re: Guys Please Give Me an Honest Opinion (Mental998)

By far the best motorcycle website I have seen. The pop up pictures on the thumbnail is a nice touch. The only thing I can recommend is to find a dedicated place to take photos of the bikes. The pics of the Fila are great, but imagine them against a white back ground! Great job!!

Re: Guys Please Give Me an Honest Opinion (J.U.996SPS)

Wow! 18 replies in a night? you guys are awesome, i highly appreciate the constructive criticism... i have made a lot of changes since this thread has gone up. I changed the mission statement but do you think it needs more work? And i took off the ducati north america link on the front page. As for pics of the shop? did you guys really look at all of the pages? i put at least 3 or 4 pics of actual inventory: ie the helmet pics on the helmet page and the dyno room pics on the dyno page... and the motorcycles for sale page is 100% up to date and will continue to be. I also took the resolution down BIG TIME on a lot of the pics that were too large - namely the pics on the front page of the showroom - they are 1/5 the size they were! Thanks again! anything else please let me know

Re: Guys Please Give Me an Honest Opinion (TL0996)

I did not look at ALL the pics, just a few. My complain about getting better pics is based on the main one of the 748S and the glare from the front window. Someone suggested a common background/location for the pictures and I agree with that completely.

Also, you need to remind yourself that it won't all happen at once. You will continually find things that you can make better in some way - a perpetual work in progress.
