Eric Bostrom was officially credited with 12th place in Saturday’s AMA Pro American SuperBike race at Barber Motorsports Park. The Team Cycle World Attack Performance Yoshimura Suzuki rider was running fifth on the final lap of the race when he was rear-ended by Jordan Suzuki’s Brett McCormick in Turn 13. Both riders crashed. McCormick was able to remount and finish 10th.
Bostrom suffered a deep, bloody laceration on his left thigh. According to the track medical staff, the wound was approximately 20-25 centimeters in length. There were no other visible injuries, and Bostrom never lost consciousness. On Saturday evening, Bostrom underwent a three-hour surgery at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, to clean and close the cut, which required 102 stitches. He is expected to be released on Sunday and return to California on Monday.
I spoke briefly with Bostrom prior to surgery, and he was in good spirits. McCormick took full responsibility for the accident.
The race was won by Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden, his fifth victory of the year. Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes, who led the majority of the 21 laps, was a close second. M4 Monster Energy Suzuki rider John Hopkins finished third. With just one race remaining in the season, Hayes leads the title chase by 18 points.
Bostrom started the race from the second row of the grid, having qualified fifth with a best lap of 1:26.096, .458 of a second behind pole-sitter Blake Young. Hayes, Hopkins and Hayden completed the front row. Bostrom dramatically jumped the start, rolling nearly into the front row of riders. Because he checked up and followed the first and second rows into Turn 1, creating no advantage for himself, according to AMA Pro Racing, Bostrom was not penalized for his miscue. He completed the first lap in ninth place.

From there, the four-time AMA champion worked his way past Jake Holden, who was subbing for the injured Ben Bostrom on the Pat Clark Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R1, and Buell’s Geoff May. When Jordan Suzuki’s Jake Zemke slowed with an engine failure on Lap 5, Bostrom found himself in sixth. He then went back-and-forth with McCormick, eventually opening a small gap on the young Canadian. With two laps remaining, he was just 3.6 seconds behind Young in fourth.
