I have been told by some that you can take delivery of your new ducati at the factory, ride around Italy for a few weeks, bring it back to the factory, and they ship it to the states for you. Anyone heard of this before??? I know people that have done this with cars, but not bikes. Any help would be appreciated.

It has been several years since Ducati offered a "Fly Buy Ride" program. It is no longer an option. Interestingly, the car companies are starting to drop this option also. I guess it's a logistical nightmare.

European delivery being dropped by the companies probably has a lot to do with the exhange rate. Before the Euro was introduced and before the US had this economical downturn, one could actually save a decent amount of cash by picking up the car in europe. Sometimes enough to pay for the whole trip. But now its probably more expensive to take delivery in europe.

BMW (cars) are still doing it. Jessica's mom just got back from Germany last month, where her friend picked up a new 3 series that was subsequently shipped to Tucson...

Sure would be cool if you could do that with a bike!

Thanks for the input all. With my sister moving to Italy next year for school, I figured it might be a great way to take a vacation and add another ducati to the garage all at the same time.

It's pretty inexpensive to rent a Ducati through www.mototouring.com. Great folks and conveniently located short taxi ride from Stazione Centrale in Milano. They have ST, Monster and MTS rentals which are well maintained and prepped. In the winter, they take their fleet to Sicily.
