http://tinyurl.com/7y4bu "klanking" sound. ST4.
Nichols Basket and Barnett clutch pack. Clutch lever OUT, lever IN, and then lever OUT again.

http://tinyurl.com/3vq4l "Ta Ting" sound (air-cooled Monster)

My ST4 dry clutch has never made the "Ta Ting" sound. And even with the Nichols Aluminum clutch basket and Barnett aluminum fiber plates it still makes the "klanking" sound. The tabs fit the basket with less than 1mm clearance.

I think the klanking sound is the straight cut primary gear set, and the Ta Ting sound is the tabs in the basket. I may be wrong.

Straight cut primary gears transfer power with less loss, however they're noisy as heck. Honda once used straight cut gears but they made one of the gears a two-part gear that was spring-loaded so that there was a constant load on the gearset. It was nice and quiet. Not sure how they do it now.

It doesn't take much of a load to quiet down the gear set. Just pulling "in" the clutch lever does it on my ST4. However I still have never heard that Ta Ting sound from my stock basket or the Nichols basket.

The flywheel nut is tight.

new plates in a new basket should be nice and quiet. old plates in a new basket or new plates in an old basket may still make a lot of noise.

the noise on any of them should go away when you pull the clutch in, giving the light rattle noise. if it doesn't on a late 3 phase alternator bike the rotor nut is most likely loose.

Re: Ducati Dry Clutch sound files, Typical? (DanST4)

Is the ST4 clutch cover closed or open? (I assume closed.) I like the way it sounds. Unfortunately I cannot get the Monster clutch sound file to open. I have an old 900 and I WANT the clutch to sould like the ST4!!! Mine has the ka-kling or Ta-Ting sound. (But I do have an open clutch, which I like the look of.) I have been kicking around the idea of a new light weight basket and a tighter clutch pack, to quiet it down a tad.

It's just the stock closed cover.
