04 has CF fairings 05 does not.....mmmm someone else chime in...

I believe the only difference is in the plastic vs. carbon fiber body work. The 2005 has a different upper fairing ( a little wider, and doesn't have the slits like the '04 has...presumably to cut down on the buffeting but I think it was to satisfy the styling police that criticized the original look of the fairings on the 749/999s).
Also, Ducati North America brought in only 60 or 62 (depending on who you ask) 2004 749s into the U.S. so quantities are highly limited for the '04s. I don't know how many are coming in of the '05s but I'm told that Ducati N.A. will bring in as many '05s that will sell, since the '05 is not a true World Supersport homologation special like the '04 was. From a collector's standpoint then, the 2004 is the rarer bike. I haven't heard anything about the titanium collets on the 2005 though. Regardless, you can't go wrong with either bike! Just get one, change the front sprocket to one less tooth and replace the stock clutch slave cylinder with one from Evoluzione and you'll be all set to go! Have fun!

Don't all 749's come with a 14t front sproket, making it a little difficult to go down a tooth in the front?? Not 100% positive about the R's but the S and standard are 14t.

Re: (galaxy)

Stock gearing on the 2005 749r is 15/36. It has the same gearing as the 999. I believe the motor on the 05 is the same as 04.

Ducati NA sold out of their U.S. allotment of 2005 749Rs in early February -- I got one of the last ones. I'm sure there are at least a couple on dealer showrooms, but probably not many -- I wouldn't think too many dealers want to floorplan a bike like that. I'd imagine most were ordered directly for customers.

I have number 56, bought from Section 8 Superbike.

Re: (trussdude)

My dealer in Kansas City has an '05 in the crate. Not sold. Don't know it's #.

Local dealer here has an '04 sitting on the floor. And the other dealer has an '05 sitting on their floor.

The '05 has Ti collets for sure, but I don't know about the '04. Those collets sure are fun to install. (NOT!)
