I am going to be putting a new clutch in my 96 900, my question is about baskets. Here are the options I am looking at so far:
paulimoto billet $186
barnett $209
nichols $299
stock 999 unit $unknown
Do any of you have experience with the paulimoto unit?
I have heard good reviews of the barnett piece and mixed reviews on the nichols. The 999 piece I assume is nice but don't really know.
I am venting the case ala Mental and Strati so the basket will be visible and honestly I have gone to a lot of work to remove all the gold colored bits on this bike so the barnett basket is probably out. Are there some baskets out there that I am not seeing?
Thanks for any input you may have. -Caleb
The only experience I have is with the Nichols basket on my 748. Very nice, light and well made. I put in the Barnett clutch pack.
The only negative I ran into was that the tangs on the Barnett plates were very tight in the basket, which led to difficult shifting. I was advised to pull the plates and take a file or a Dremmel and take the tangs down a few thousands. After I did this, problem solved.
Go with the barnett/paulimoto and save the money...Also, DO NOT go with the carbon barnett clutch pac if you are venting the clutch case....Did that to mine and now I have to clean black crap off the frame all of the time....

I put a 999S basket in my 998 after mine was toastd for $400 but that included a full set of friction with 300 miles and hub also. So now I have a spare hub should I lowside on the right and destroy mine plus another complete set of steels. If I lowside I'm pretty sure the basket will survive.
Neat thing about the 999s basket is that it's drilled out (lighter than my stock 998 basket).
I got it from Motowheels last summer off some bike they put a slipper on and who know what else. Poke around for a deal like that. Of course those other baskets are pretty slick too and probably a lot lighter to boot.
I too have an aluminum basket out of a 999. Emperor Nero gave it to me after I paid him $5 shipping. I doubt anybody ended up with a better deal than mine. Thanks again Emperor. Does anyone make a hub only, other than VeeTwo?
Thank you all for the input and opinions. I think I will go either stock 999 or Paulimoto. The motowheels unit is real nice looking but at that price I just can't do it. Whatever way I go I will post some pictures when it is all together.
Does anyone have a stock 999 basket that they want to sell to a good home?
Fred @ Yoyodyne said he can get the clutch hub seperately. Emailed him about a price a while ago and haven't heard anything on it since. Usually he sells it as part of a lightweight clutch kit.
Ducati Kaemna sells one seperately too, but it'd be a bit pricey w/ the exchange rate + shipping.
Last time I looked, Fred had a real nice deal for an aluminum basket and hub. I've got a Nichols basket and have had nothing but smooth shifts, smooth clutch action, and faster accelleration.

Oneducs, that's a picture of a Barnett baskett not a hub.
Given how long Nichols have been in the industry ... and theirs are hard anodized ... AND they lowered the prices $100 ... I'll stick with their parts certainly for 5 or so more years to see how the new players to the market hold up. Until then, my reputation is trusted with Nichols.
