Clear coat my upper - what type

I bought a white numer plate sticker off ebay and would like to clear coat over it after I put it on. What type or brand of clear coat in a spraycan will work? Any special prep before I spray the whole upper? Thanks for the help.

Re: Clear coat my upper - what type (DUC916)

A guy who did some paint work for me said he did not like to clear over large stickers since they trap air no matter how well you install them. I dunno. I am no paint guy but this made sense to me. He stenciled my parts instead.

I would advise against clear coating over a large vinyl sticker. I have put two front number plates on 916s it is a real pain but they can come out looking fine. If you think you can do a decent job with a spray can of clear then why not paint the white as well? Personally I let the people who are experts do that kind of thing. It cost me a lot more to be come good at something then it would have to pay someone to do it in the first place.

I would think for about $100 you can get a body shop to paint the number plate area white, separate the red and white with a tape pin stripe and clear the whole thing. Painting a Ducati with a rattle can.......I can't imagine.

I wouldn’t clear over it either. I have one on my 998 and like the fact that I can replace it when it gets all dinged up by rocks, big “hard” bugs, etc. Believe me, it will get chipped up! Mine has in 9K miles.

Ok.. Ok I will leave the sticker as is with no clear coat. I checked with a local bike painter and he wanted over $300 to paint a front number plate on my bike. I figured it would be cheaper to find an original, but could not find one. Thanks for the help.

Re: (DUC916)

$300! Scott Morse at Morse Racing painted every piece of my 998 that had red paint on it, repaired the side panel that gets crunched by the clutch in right side low side, put all the factory decals on, and cleared the whole thing nicer than the factory did for $950 and that includes two colors since the tail section had a white number plate and pinstripes. $300? what's he painting Faberge eggs?

Re: Clear coat my upper - what type (DUC916)

Here is how I did my number plate:
First I masked off and painted the white number plate myself then wet sanded it down with some 1200 grit to knock down the paint build-up from where I pulled the tape off to give it a seamless look, and added the pinstripes and decals. Then I took tail section to my local paint shop to be clear coated as clear from a spay can can never match the quality/depth you get from a professional shop. Since I had preformed the time consuming stuff myself I was able to keep costs way down. ........ btw total cost for me was around 100 bucks including white spray bomb, decals, stripes & clear coat
