I'm about to install new front pads and was wondering if the thin metal clips with holes in them are necessary on the back of the pads. I know they help disipate heat but wondered if they are necessary on the back of a racing pad.

Not really. They are just there to spread the force of the piston across the entire backing plate. When you run piston to backing plate you can wear the coating off the backing plate and it can get into places. I run Carbon Lorraine pads as well and the white ceramic coating on the back will wear off.

I usually run them, with some "brake" grease (very light coat to prevent squealing). Never had any issues, running them or not. But then again, I take my calipers apart frequently for cleaning and fluid changes (track bike).
