This was discussed on the local talk shows yesterday.
The kids had a legal right to wear the American flag. On any other day it would have been no problem. But...
The obvious motive of the anglo kids was to send a message to the hispanics on their day of celebration. That's why they were told to change their shirts. They were provoking a response whether they realised it or not. Violence was an obvious possibility in a school that is 1/3 hispanic in an area with a history of racial tension. It was a really dumb thing to do and classless as well. In fact, if these kids had known history they would know that Cinco de Mayo is to celebrate the Mexican defeat of France as France tried to take over Mexico. When the French were defeated it opened the door for the U.S. to take control of the Southwestern U.S. So in reality Mexicans died for our benefit. Smart kids would have worn a shirt with BOTH flags on it.

Then the hispanic kids went on a stupid march the next day. That was even dumber than the shirt incident. As usual they overplayed their hand using the race card.

This would have been a minor thing if it weren't for the media. Advice: stories on tv are often less significant than they are portrayed.

The silver lining:
Every time hispanics march in the streets with Mexican flags it increases the motivation for non-hispanic Americans to FINALLY get tough with immigration.

The Vice Pricipal (who told the kids "remove the shirts or be suspended") should be fired, and INS should interview all the kids who protested yesterday chanting "We demand respect!", to see how many of their Monnies and Daddies are here illegally. I can't believe ANYONE can take the side of the people who thought the flag wearing kids were wrong. This (for the time being) is still AMERICA, if you don't like it here, GO FOOKIN BACK ACROSS THE RIVER! Would it also be "tasteless" to wear an American flag shirt on St. Patricks day? The REALLY stoopid part was all the Latino kids saying "This is OUR independance day, we demand respect" (Cinco De Mayo is NOT "Mexican independance day" you fookin morons, maybe if you actually WENT to school you'd fookin' know that!).......:banghead
