My girlsfriend's bank just called, and asked her stop by to close down her accounts ASAP. Two men are in custody that have her account number. Apparently, there are people going around restaurants with scanners and paying waiters/waitresses to scan the credit cards.
A big "F" you to the waiters willing to do that...

Any time you lose sight of your credit card, there's the potential someone will steal the information. Also, I've personally seen scams where the person working the cash register will make a duplicate of the credid card swiper reciept at the end of the day to capture all the information.

The only real defense is to monitor your accounts very closely and look for any unusual activity. You can be completely vigilant by not losing sight of your credit cards and shredding everything, but there's still a chance of getting your info taken.

Re: (erik996)

a guy at work took a hole punch to the stripe on his CCs after his sister got scammed.
That way they have to manually swipe the card or punch in the account numbers.
But then he can't pay at the pump or use a ATM.
