This is not RC51 related, but I am looking to get an air compressor to have around my house for minor things. Sears, Lowes and a few other places have some "oil free" motor ones for a few dollars less than regular oil compressors. My question is how reliable are the oil free compressors? Some say the are noiser than oil lubed motors. I probably would rather have a horizontal portable tank. I was looking at this one here from sears (#1) Craftsman 19541 25 gal. Air Compressor, 2 hp, Horizontal Tank at Sears.com

or (#2) Craftsman 16778 25 gal. Air Compressor, 1.6 hp, Vertical Tank, 2-Stage Oil Free Pump at Sears.com

or maybe a vertical one from Lowes (#3) 1.6-HP (Running) 30-Gallon Cast-Iron Air Compressor

Any comments or suggestions welcome..

I have a Sears, oil free, 6 hp, 30-gallon up-right that's 7 years old. It ups to 130 psi, and I've done more tire rotations, timing belts, and various other mechanical work then imagined. Considering I paid over $350 for my Snap-On air ratchet and another $450 for my Snap-On air impact gun, just one of those is more then I paid for the compressor. ($350)

Even if it takes a crapola, for the 7 years I've had it, it's MORE then paid for itself. I'd buy another one, pronto. Only thing you do is clean the air-intake filter every so often.

I also suggest you install a dedicated 120V, 20 amp line/outlet for the compressor, as to avoid breaker trips, and surges from using common outlets.

Thanks for your input. Sears store does have an oil free version with a 33 gallon tank compared to these with 30 gal tank for about $100 less. Just wanted a little input before I brought one and was not happy with it.

Is your compressor louder than most when it starts, or does it sound normal?

oil free compressors are always gonna be loud. For what it's worth several guys at work suggested getting something from harbor freight since the compressors are relatively simple and most are chinese cloans of stuff anyways. They work fine and several of the guys have the big 30 gallon ones for their home shops.

my neighbor has a harbor freight. I used it the other day as mine is broken currently ( it's a over 20 years old sears ) and I would have to say it is pretty much like all of H.F.'s equipment..... cheap. it works, does the job, but it's loud as hell, and has little pressure until it's run for about 5 min. tiny pump. his is the 30 something gallon.
