I just wanted to say hi to the guy on the 999R I saw in Ottawa, IL today. If he reads here, that is.

I just got back from a nice four hour ride around central Illinois. While I was up in the Starved Rock area I happened to notice another Ducati. I passed what looked like a red 999 going the other way on a street in Ottawa, IL. So I turned around and caught up to get another look.

When I pulled up alongside a few blocks later do I see a 999? Well, sort of. It was a red 999R. We rode alongside one another for a couple of blocks and I read the lettering on the side of his machine several times. Thumbs up were exchanged, but he turned left to do the twisty rode I had just come from and I was headed straight to find some lunch. So we parted ways there.

It might sounds strange that I think this is post worthy, but a 999R is a very exotic bike for central Illinois. I can't imagine there are very many of them around here, and to actually see one out on the rode was a treat. All the more so that this bike looked ridden. It was no garage queen. Well used tires, a bit dusty and bug splattered, in short a 999R that has obviously been enjoyed.

You'll love California if you like to see exotic bikes, especially in the Malibu area on Sunday's it's heaven.

Hi Bill:
That was me! I to ride every new bike down to Starved Rock from Naperville to wear the "chicken stripes" off the tires.
Regards,
Scott

how is starved rock so far this year? cops, gravel, etc....

Hey Scott! Nice to have met ya, sort of. :)

That is one very fine bike you have. I got a big kick out of seeing it. I hope you didn't think it unfriendly of me not to chat at a stoplight or something, but I was in search of food and a bathroom.

I didn't ride too many roads in the area when I was there, but I didn't find any gravel or such on any of the curves I was on. I really can't say that would be true of all the roads, but the curvy road leading from Ottawa to Starved Rock was clean. Aside from a few tar snakes and patches, that is.

I've only been up there five or six times, but I've never seen a heavy police presence. Certainly none camped along the roads. Have other riders had police trouble there?

I had one jump on the brakes and stop in his lane after I went by, but he never came after me. I did see a 999 in Peoria Heights today while out riding. For all you CA guys you have to understand it is so rare to see ANYTHING other than a HD in central Illinois that it surpises you every time it happens.

Tonight around six I couldn't stand it anymore so I strapped on the gear and saddle up on my new 04 Chernobyl Yellow 999 and took off down the road. I figure with seven days of rain coming up starting tomorrow here in Minnesota I better get what riding in I can (I'll start to build the Ark tomorrow, everyone bring two of every motorcycle). After a couple of hours of a nice pace and a few attempted knee drags I stopped at the local watering hole. The whole parking lot is field with nothing but Harleys, any my 999 Duc. What was amazing at this point is how non riders, wanna be riders, bovines and babes who started to circle around my bike asking me questions. With my ego flying high I thanked the on lookers. Now the funny part of this long story is how PISSED the Harley riders got, including the OCC wanna be chopper types. Goes to show that Choppers and Harleys are not all the rage and a good looking sport bike still draws the crowds.. Now if the women would have stopped screaming when I took my helmet off...

Drthompson65...it may be the Chernobyl Yellow that was drawing the crowd.
My girl friend and I were on the Chernobyl Yellow Gold Wing, and she wanted to stop for something at Starbucks. I pulled in, got off the bike, and remained outside while she went in to purchase her drink. I don't know how many people came up to admire the Gold Wing...but it was more than have ever looked at the 998R at the same location. I was amazed.
