Does anyone know if heads from a 2003 900 will fit previous year's motors? I know they switched from oil cooled barrels to air cooled, but I didn't think this affected the oil galleys in the heads. Does anyone have FHE of this cross-fittment?

2003 was the first year for the 1000ds engine... Those heads will not fit any 900 engine. The stud spacing is different. I believe the change from oil/air cooled to just air cooled was in 1999.

Good point, but the seller said they were 2003 900 heads so obviuosly there is a descrepancy somewhere...

Let me revise then, assuming the heads were 2002 vintage 900 engine, would they fit previous year 900 engines?

I'm pretty sure that all the 900 heads are interchangable.

I believe straight air cooling happened in 2001 or 2002.

No, the move to air-only came in 02 I think. '99 was still air/oil.

Yes, but in 1999 (or was it 1998?) they moved the return lines inside the barrels.

Well either the guy I bought the engine from told me the wrong year or they moved the lines in 98. I dont really know.
