WSB Superpole

Yamaha Motor Italy’s Troy Corser will start the World Superbike season-opener from the pole position after setting a new track record in Superpole qualifying at the Losail Circuit in Doha, Qatar. The former world champion finished the second timed qualifying session second to James Toseland, then lowered his time by over half a second to convincingly capture Superpole honors. That after rebounding from a minor crash in the second free practice session.

Corser finished his Superpole lap with a time of 1:58.402 minutes, lowering the best lap mark set in second qualifying by Toseland.

Max Biaggi, the rider who replaced Corser on the Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra team, will make his World Superbike debut from second on the grid. The former MotoGP star jumped from fifth in final qualifying to second in Superpole by improving his time by nearly .7 seconds.

Hannspree Ten Kate Honda’s Toseland finished about .3 secs. behind Biaggi to sit third on the grid, with Corser’s teammate Nori Haga filling out the front row.

The Ducati Xerox team came next, Lorenzo Lanzi and world champion Troy Bayliss fifth and sixth, respectively. Both were over a second off Corser’s pace.

Two more Suzukis followed, Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra’s Yukio Kagayama and Max Neukirchner on the Suzuki Germany bike.

1. Troy Corser (Yamaha) 1:58.402

2. Max Biaggi (Suzuki) 1:58.724

3. James Toseland (Honda) 1:59.005

4. Nori Haga (Yamaha) 1:59.294

5. Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati) 1:59.537

7. Yukio Kagayama (Suzuki) 1:59.964

8. Max Neukirchner (Suzuki) 2:00.098

9. Fonsi Nieto (Kawasaki) 2:00.240

10. Robby Rolfo (Honda) 2:00.414

I just thad a look at last years times from Losail,

Thur - Wet so times don't count
Fri - Dry, Qual - Bayliss 2:00:6 fastest, Superpole - 1:59.6

So this year the bike is the same speed but the others are about 1-1.5 seconds quicker.

Although, whats the go with Lanzi being quicker than Bayliss.

Are Ducati Sandbagging for an extra 200cc or is the bike totally at it's limit?

No matter what has transpired in the past - it's good to see Max up and running strong. Perhaps that year off was just what he needed to gain focus...
