I'm pulling the forks and shock for service and need some ideas for supporting the rear end while the shock is off. I have Pitbull stands for the front and rear. Front is no problem but with the rear shock removed, I need some ideas for supporting the bike from the bottom so I don't crush anything. Hoist is not possible. I'm thinking of simply using a couple of jackstands with a 2X4 between them or a floor jack with a 2X4 on top. I just need to make that whatever I do is stable because the shop will have my parts for a week or so.
put jackstands underneath the pegs on your rearsets, then remove the rear stand.
if you don't have fixed peg rearsets, simply pull the pegs off and turn them upside down. this way they won't fold up when you put the jackstand under them
Hadn't thought of that, but sounds perfect. I have the Sato rearsets so they're fixed. Probably wrap them in tape to protect the knurled surface of the pegs.
Yep. other option that I have used is a steel pipe through the swingarm pivot and then put that on the jack stands if you had factory rear sets.
It's how we did my buddies shock on his Z1000 and we used the same steel pipe under his Header Flanges to hold the front up to do his Stem bearings.
Abba Stands USA has a stand that lifts by the swingarm pivot. I also got their adapters to be able to lift both wheels at once ans also by the footpegs if you wanted to pull the swingarm.
