A buddy of mine picked up an 848 at a rock bottom, gettin' outta town price. Only problem is the wheels were chromed. Yes, it made me ill, too.
Anyhow, he's in the market for a set of wheels and we were wondering if the bolt patterns, disc mounts, axle sizes, etc. were the same for an 848 as they are for a 748. Are they interchangeable?
You can mount the 848 rear wheels onto a 748, thatīs a straight swap.
The front wheels should require 998R brake discs with less offset (I think it was 10mm instead of 10). Axle should be the same as I could mount a 916 wheel in my 999 and a 1098 wheel did fit as well. Would surprise me if the 848 had a different axle. Anyway, you could change the bearings if the axle wouldnīt fit.
The only thing you might worry about are the wheel spacers, but hey, thatīs shouldnīt be a problem, right?
Why donīt you get the 848 wheels powdercoated or painted?
Why donīt you get the 848 wheels powdercoated or painted?
We'd thought about that but there's a rumour that says the re-heating process of getting the chrome off and the powder coating curing process might weaken the wheel.
I'm totally without a clue on this stuff so if the assembled knowledge of this board can chime in it would certainly be appreciated.
You can mount 748 wheels up to a 848 and it's pretty easy. You have to use a 748 speedo spacer and 748R rotors. Also on the rear we've seen interference with a 5 spoke cast mag wheel. Here is a thread showing pics of 3 different wheels on a 848. 848 wheels please! - Page 2 - DucatiSpot - The Ultimate Ducati Forum

I have used them without any real issues. Requires 748R/998R rotors. Yoyodyne stocks Brembo HP in this type.
Some brands or styles of rear wheels are very close to the rear caliper, in some cases a small amount of filing or machining or the back edge of caliper may be required for proper clearance.
Spacers for the front are required, easy to do and simple to fab up.
This is usually a small price to pay given how cheap mag wheels for the 748~998 can be bought compared to what 848 Magnesium wheels cost. I have bought 3 sets of mag wheels for the price that LP is blowing out one set of Marchesini 848 wheels on eBay right now. It is worth doing!
