no, it is going on the track but you started saying a corse bike was better than a yamaha because it won WSBK, are you serious? what does that have to do with this thread
that R1 would EAT a 1098 up on the street, starbuks and or any track, fact
Possibly.......but at the end of the day, it's still just an R1..........

Umm, Ducati currently manufacturers the closest bike to the actual race bike, then any other manufacturer. They did it with the CBR1000RR vs 1098R and the CBR was slightly faster, but then again, it was modded to the hilt, where the 1098R was bone stock. Mod the stink out of both the R1 and the 1098R, I think your "opinion" would change. Have you even tracked a modern Ducati thats setup properly, not just sat on one in a dealer, or did a test ride?

Talking about riding on the street is totally pointless, the Ducati was never designed to be a street bike.

Bro, have you ridden your own (not borrowed) modern Ducati on the track? All you know is what others tell you, which as you know is usually hearsay until you try it yourself.
I have ridden an R6 and all 3 of the baby Superbikes on the track. As you know, I currently race a 749R. What I've learned is very simple, the fastest guys out there, don't ride Ducati's. They have zero intensions on riding Ducati and are very happy with whatever they're riding. I recently met a chap on a 749RS that destroyed everybody in the heavyweight twin's class, even the 1098's! Thats an awesome rider on a good bike...
If you were to take the fastest guy out there and put them on a Ducati, I have a strong feeling they'd do the same pace as whatever bike they already had.
Perhaps a more interesting comparison would be to keep it within brands. Take the original '98 R1 and throw $10k worth of parts at it to see if it matches the new '09 R1.
Or maybe find an 851 without a home and do the same to see if it could match an 848.
Your 749 is a fat overweight pig compared to an 848!
Time moves on, stuff just keeps getting better.
And yes I do own a ducati or two, and I will agree with mrgrn, there are an awful lot of elitista!

I think the elitist mentality is because most of us who own new Ducati's (yes I have an 848 as well) understand the potential of them and wish people would be more open minded. We've all ridden Japanese bikes, even I have owned one. But most of us have zero experience taking bike X and ringing its neck out on the track where it belongs, then comparing the results.
Ohh and my 749R race bike is lighter the my 848. Its nowhere near stock...

Oh, i know, ohlins forks on a ducati are SO much better then them Ohlins on a R1
bone stock $40,000 bike compared to a bike that cost how much? it is embarrassing the CBR was even close

i also know or a few guys on old slow 51's who dispatch 1098's so what?
these are street bikes and you just stay pinned on WSBK and now you are going to tryto trump me with your track ability, has nothing to dowith the post, what's next your bike is worth more or you can beat me up?
sad to say one of the biggest reasons i do not own a ducati is because of most of its owners i see them every weeked talking chit about how superior their bikes are and how it is great to be better than rice burners and jap bikes etc. I don't want to be involved with that mentality and i know whatyou are going to say is, that is what poor people say who can't pay for a ducati right? amazing how i can peg the comments b4 they come
i know of a few real nice guys who happen to own a ducati and they will not be here, nor blathering on about how great they are to feel justified in their purchase either. I happen to like some of the ducati line and have contemplated buying one for years but their reliability, cost of ownership, and fellow owners are what keep me away not that the elite care
i am glad you race and i would love to see your bike and i support the sport but i could care less if your bike is superior to mine because it says ducati, not my gig

I never said Ducati's were superior... I think thats the mixup here.
My point was simple. Riding on the street to prove a bike's worth is dumb and futile. The street bears no consistency or accuracy for "claims" of performance. Its all he-said, she-said and sure you can throw carbon bits on a bike and spend 50 hrs doing a paint job, but in the end its still all bling and nothing else.
The only way to test/compare motorcycles is on the track, with professional riders, willing to crash to prove the bikes worth. Since nobody has done that test, the whole thread is stupid and mute.
Thats my point...
I also agree with you that MOST Ducati owners are elitist... I get sick and tired of them spending tens of thousands of dollars on bikes that will eventually sit in a garage somewhere collecting dust. But in the modern day with the 848/1098 series, we're seeing some Japanese riding people who are finally stepping out of the closet and learning, there are other bikes out there, besides ones made in Japan...
I'm an usher of change... My pa bought a BMW after driving one of mine and my best friend bought a Ducati, after drewling over mine. LOL
So.. Someone put alot of money into an R1 and it was faster then a stock 1098.
Imagine that.
BTW.. A buddy of mine is selling his -05 R1 that was Öhlins former testbike.. Comes fully equipped with WSBK forks (impossible to buy outright), Rear suspension (impossible to buy outright) and steering damper. Yamaha France endurance tuned engine and full CF bodywork aswell as Brembo MotoGP wet-setup brakes (VERY hard to come by, but not impossible). Oh.. and 16.5" magnesium Marchesini rims with Bridgestone slicks (Need connections to buy).
He´s asking a price less then what a new base 1098 sold for in -07. So.. I mean.. The builder could have just purchased THAT and knocked the socks of the R1 he built for less money then he spent.

Just sayin´

But these guys don't ride on the track, they just wanna show-off there stuntah skills on the streets.
most of the people yopu are speaking about own 999/1098/D16rr's
i bet more CBR1000rr's make track days then 1098's or D16s in perspective
most duke owners like to portray or alude to being able to do that or the bike comes magically equipped to run by itself better on the track based upon the name and cost of said bike but sadly i know guys on 4000$ beat on GSXR's 600's stomping 1098 series bikes
it is called walk softly and carry a big stick and most ducatista walk loudy and carry nothing IMO
people who brag annoy me. sorry my pet peeve not yours

Just because you've got money and can afford nice toys, doesn't mean you can ride.

On an average track day, I see 4 Ducati's out of 150 riders. Even in the Battle of the Twins race's, on average you see 4 Ducati's at one given time. Most Ducati owners are too scared to crash there precious garage queen.

No kidding, most Ducati owners don't know jack shit. They buy Ducati's because they "assume" they're "race bikes" go out there and immediately bin them. Needless to say, guys on inline 4 liter bikes, do the same thing on a more regular basis. Power doesn't mean jack shit, if you don't know how to ride. Hence one reason I race the "smaller" duc's.

I love people who brag. Let'em keep braggin' until they can't afford to race anymore because of how many times they've crashed, trying to keep up. I'm not fast, but I win by being consistent!

Thats a pretty good resume for 2008. You do know that the 1098RS/F08 which was run in WSBK/BSB was substantially under powered and heavier then the Japanese bikes that followed it.
