Default Raise/pullback handlebars for 1997 900SS?

Anybody know any supplier of bar risers or other solutions to raise and/or pullback the handlebars (clip-ons, actually) on a 1997 900SS? My middle-aged back can't take it anymore. I can't ride the bike for more than 45 minutes without getting off with a backache.

Thanks all - BrianK

Answered my own question - looks like Cycle Cat makes some, and better yet, Chris Kelley sells 'em.

But any other ideas still gratefully accepted! - BrianK

Was gonna suggest Cycle Cat or Helibars, Chris is good for the first stop, he knows what is around.

Here is an alternative however I am no sure the colour suits.

I've got a set of used Helibars. Pulled them off my '98 900CR and replaced with CycleCats. Both worked great, but I wanted more adjustability and the bling factor is pretty good. I don't need the Heli's anymore and can let them go cheap to a good home. They have scratches from where the controls mount, but all the exposed areas look good.

Reagrds,

Jeff

Buy the Helibars Jeff is selling. I have a set of Helis on my '99 and they made a world of difference...that is until I put a Sargent seat on which threw my weight back onto my wrists.

I checked HeliBar's site but they say theirs don't fit 1997s. So I ordered some Cycle Cats from Mr. Kelley. Pricey, but less so than back surgery....

Monstaman, I was at a Harley dealer just last weekend (I have a Deuce in the stable - great bike, actually - and I needed a new key) and when I was leaving, a guy pulled in on a Harley with, swear to God, apes ALMOST that ridiculous. My wife was on her Bonneville; she pulled up alongside me and we looked at one another and had a good giggle. I'm not lookin' to raise 'em quite that far!!

You are going to love the Cycle Cats, but I can guarantee that the Heli bars I have fit the '97 900SS, as I ran them on mine for the last 7 years. Perhaps Heli just doesn't carry those bars for your bike anymore. The CC's are sweet though, so enjoy!

Regards,

Jeff

What was I thinking? Cycle Cat, of course, continues to be in the midst of some trauma that doesn't permit their filling orders... so I'm on back-order for now.

Jeff, how did those work on your bike? How much rise/pullback? Were you able to use stock cables/hoses/wiring? Did you have any fairing interference (I have a CR, and there doesn't look to be much room to move up the bars)? How much you asking? PM or email me, or post here, I'll check back.

I'm also looking at "convertibars" - they look good, mucho adjustment (shades of monstaman's apehangers!) but ye gods, the price! That'll break my back before the clip-ons do!

Thanks! - Brian

Here's a pic of the bars. The bars have a 3 inch rise from the top of each clamp to the center of each handlebar, if that makes sense. I'm not sure what pullback, but I had back problems for a while and was able to rotate the bars and move them up sufficiently to make the Duc feel extremely comfortable. Even at max rise I was able to use stock cables. A few years ago I installed FCR carbs and was still able to use the bars. I also installed some Bar Snake inserts in the bars to reduce vibration.

The areas on the bars where the controls and grips mount have scratches and sections where paint has been worn away. All exposed areas look very good. I am happy to take more close ups to show what I'm referring to. I think a quick spray of paint would dress it up if that was a concern. If you are interested, does $50 + shipping sound reasonable?

Regards,

Jeff

The denouement? I bought Jeff's Heli-Bars (he gave me a great deal - thanks again Jeff! ). They went on easily, using stock cables, and I think they're gonna be great.

I'll find out when I find my starting problem... -- but that's another story for another thread...! - BrianK

Heya Brian, great stuff getting it sorted, yeah I think those bars might be a coupla inches more than you want but it was worth considering

Don't they look stupid and the worst thing is these guys think they are cool when everyone is larfing at them.

Hey, if these bars allow me to ride for more than a half hour without back pain - and I'm hopeful - they're everything I was hoping for!!!
