Default 749 frame & desmodue engine fitment?

I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried putting a desmodue engine (900 or 1000) in a 749/999 frame & using a xx9 swingarm. I know several have done this with the 916 frames, but haven't seen it done with anything newer.

Seems to me it would be nice to have the simplicity and light weight of the 2V engine paired with the linkage suspension and stuff on the sbk's.

Couple issues I could think of would be the motor mounts lining up between the 900 engine & xx9 frame, and whether or not the xx9 swingarm would fit on that combo at all (probably with some machine work).

It can be done. How easy depends on your abilities and access to a machine shop. The engine will bolt right in but the cases are wider and the swingarm won't fit. But that's an easy fix, sometimes the little things can be the hard things to fix.

But you know what no one considers when thinking about a project like this is for what end? You'll end up with the heavier bike unless you spend oodles of money on light weight stuff and you'll have a bike that makes 80 hp? I mean what is the point?

it would actually be just a little less work than a 2V into an older 748/916 chassis swap like i did....

BUT, if you just happen to have a **9 rolling chassis just lying around, and the same for a 2V motor, then yeah, after you cut the case at the swingarm pivot exactly the same as you would for a 2V motor into a 916/748 frame, it will bolt right up.

THEN, you'll likely have to work out an airbox/battery tray solution, and have a set of headers made from a combination of the two, among a few other smaller things than can give a headache.....

check out my write-up: SBK/SS hybrid

as far as what is the point? i did it because i wanted to. i did it because i wanted a bike that would be more 'ridable' than the 916 formerly was. i did it because i wanted a bike that would be unique and i could truly say it was all mine. i did it because i am a firm believer that it's way more fun to go fast on a slow bike than slow on a fast bike. and i did it because i pretty much have to take everything i have apart and see how many other ways it will go back together.....

BTW, my bike 'feels' significantly lighter than a std. issue 916, at little to no expense to me, but that's because it's stripped down to the bare eesentials.....
