Default O-ring for gearshift shaft?

I have my alternator cover off to replace my sprag clutch. Just noticed that the gearshift shaft, inside the alternator cover, has a machined groove that looks like it's to accomodate an o-ring. It's just outbound of the lip on the shaft that meets the alternator cover. Looks like a logical place for an o-ring, to prevent leaks around the shaft, but unless I misplaced it one time I had the alternator cover off - and this is the fourth time this year (various reasons....), that's entirely possible I guess.

Anybody know if there's supposed to be an o-ring there?

Thanks - BrianK

you didn't mention which bike. the easiest thing is to download a spare parts catalog and look at the exploded view of whatever it is you are working on and see

try this link (it should be ducati.com then bikes, then spare parts in case the link doesn't work)

Ducati.com

1997 Supersport 900. Those parts catalogs don't go back far enough for mine (but thank you).
