power commander for st4s

I posted this in the sport touring forum but it tends to move a little s...l...o...w...

I have a st4s with arrow slip on's and a drilled air box(no specific hole sizes just made swiss cheese). Found out the stock ecu wont adjust ehough with both pipes and an open air box.

I was looking at the FIM 5.9 ecu replacment but have heard they havent quite worked out the bugs.

The PCIII usb looks like it would do the job (for a third the $$)but there is no listing for the st4s.
I e-mailed dyno-jet and they told me to check with fast by ferracci(i guess FBF has done it before) still waiting for a reply from them.

so my questions to you...
Will the S4r PCIII fit my ST4s's (same engine, ECU and TB's i think)?
I know the PCIII can be had for around $300.00 but what is the average map and dial in run?
Any other suggestion's are valued.

i'm 99% sure that the st4S and s4R run the same PCIIIusb. best price i found on them was at http://www.kyleusa.com. as for building a custom map, it depends on where you are and how "off" your stock settings are. i pay an average of $300 in the new england area.

I have one fom my 02' ST4S that is from Ferracci. I wound up taking the mods off because I wasn't very happy with the performance. The Ferracci airbox mod raised the tank up about an inch and when it was light on fuel moved around to much. With the power commander and the airbox installed I would get some bogging at low rpm and a flat spot around 6K. Wasn't that interested in spending the time to tune it. I use the bike for trips with the lady so performance is not my priority. Planning to see if I could have it reprogrammed for my 749 with the exhaust mod (Strati ) If you want to check it out before spending the money I'll send it to you (paypal me the $ it's worth), I'll paypal you the $ back when you return it. Hate to see someone waste the money on the Ferracci unit if it doeasn't work for them. Never know you may be happy with it.

Lot of mapping discussion following this post so let me throw a related questions out there. I'll put it in two brief parts:
1) Since most bikes are mapped lean for meeting EPA purposes when they are new.
2) If you complained to your factory dealer while the bike was covered under warranty shouldn't they re-map under warranty as a "throttle response" issue?

I have been looking at different exhausts (Staintune seems to be my favorite) as an option for my ST4S but since my bike is still under warranty I figured the best first step would be to get the fuel system re-mapped under warranty before making any changes.

Thoughts?

I just drilled the stock box and install a K&N filter. I don't think I would like the tank lifted at all. Sounds like pour design by FBF.

good luck in selling that one to the dealership but it sounds good to me.
in my research the main choices i've found for the st4s are:

1) stock ecu - My understanding is the 5.9 ecu is not re mappable it has an adjustment (via computer) that adjust the whole map by a percentage. This percentage can be dialed in pretty sweet with a pipe only mod but when you start messin with air filters also its too much for the stock ECU to compensate. COST = price of pipes and a computer tune up

2) Ducati performance ECU -makes a replacement ECU (in a kit with pipes and air box, filter) that has the adjustments pre mapped (dont know about getting the ecu seperate)-COST= around $1700.00 + install

3) FIM ECU - FIM makes a replacement ecu that disables the security immobilizer and has tons of adjustment and is feature packed with track day settings and adjustability, etc. but I did hear they are having some problems with the unit. COST = about $700.00 + comp. tune up

4) FBF kit- sounds similar to the Ducati kit but with a power comander instead of a replacement ECU COST=?????(don't know, just found it from Dave B.)

the simplest way to mod a ST4S is to buy the pipes you want and have the stock ECU tweaked.

Sorry for the ramlings but there you have it!

the idle trimmer adjustment on the std ecu works in fuel number, not percentage. so it has more percentage effect at idle (fuel number around 3ms) than at wot (fuel number about 12ms) by about 4 times. which is why you need a lot of trimmer to make decent wot changes and why you get rich low speed issues from that.

the fim ecu in the st4s usually work great. you fit it and adjust the idle mixture - as you would if you fitted a dp ecu - and go from there. assuming the base set up of your bike is any good, of course.
