9 lbs? that sounds to good to me (must be without acid). But, at least I can see that I have choices!

I just bought a PC680 Odyssey battery for $71 - including $17 shipping, and 7.75% sales tax. It should be here Tuesday at the latest. The battery itself was $53.49.

Buckelew, I hope you have the same experience that I have. I installed a Odyssey PC680MJ in my 916 in May 2001. It's tlll going strong.

I also put an Odyssey in my 900SS and am very happy with it.

Batteries Plus is a good source for all batts also. no shipping cost if you have one in town. i have a generic brand sealed unit in the Hotrod M944 that is going on 5 years of service. the guys there are total battery nerds too. they found the smallest, lightest batt that would work in the bike.

The Odyssey is going into my BMW. I just got a lead-acid battery for the Duc without thinking. When the Duc one goes next. I may think about a smaller battery and just plastic weld the box for it.

How about a smaller battery that fits in the tray and still allows you access to the frame plug to install sliders?

According to the Odyssey website they do not make one for a Duc superbike after a 2000 model year. Which one would work for a 2001 748? Do you have to modify the bettery box? How is the weight compared to a lead acid stock battery?

In 2001, the bikes were fited with a revised starter motor gear ratio that drew less current and made it possible to start the bike using a smaller battery. So the battery box on the later superbikes is too small for an Odyssey. The stock battery for later bikes is the Yuasa YT12B-BS (10 AH, 125 CCA, 7.6 lbs.) It's an excellent battery, try to find a lighter battery with the same specs.

For the later bikes, and for track use of early bikes, the weight-saving battery-of-choice is the sealed and non-spillable AGM maintenance-free Yuasa YTZ7S. It's the same size as the later stock battery, but with only 60% of the amp-hour rating.

The AH rating is a measure of reserve capacity. A 10AH-rated battery can produce one amp of current flow for 10 hours, or two amps for five hours, or 10 amps for one hour, etc. A 6AH-rated battery can only supply 60% of that. So if you let your bike sit for a month without being on a trickle-charger you'll have a (10-15% less each month) reduced reserve for starting because any battery will self-discharge. Once started, if you don't ride long enough to fully recharge, you'll be down on cold-cranking amps (CCA) the next time you try to restart.

A lower battery AH-rating is OK for a track bike where weight savings is paramount, but at the track there's little concern about being left stranded with a dead battery.
