Fergie - you are right: it never stops. It started before 1948 and it continues today.
A military firing range? They dragged that excuse up again, did they?
Any excuse will do for the racist Israeli state. When my government and yours say that they support Israel, what they are really saying is that they support a racist state whose whole existence is built upon the relentless ethnic cleansing of another people.
The US did that to the native Indians? Yes. Did Australia do that to the Aboriginals? Yes.
Does that make it right for Israel to do it today, in the 21st century?
That's like saying that because US once had slaves, the US should have slaves now.
And I love the way Mark Regev - who comes from Australia - says that the Palestinians can take it up with the Israeli supreme court.
You couldn't make this shit up. And he would have said that with a straight face, too.
...the rising political force in America is not the one with which Bibi has aligned Israel. As the Israeli columnist Ari Shavit noted in the newspaper Haaretz last week: "In the past, both the Zionist movement and the Jewish state were careful to be identified with the progressive forces in the world. ... But in recent decades more and more Israelis took to leaning on the reactionary forces in American society. It was convenient to lean on them. The evangelists didn't ask difficult questions about the settlements, the tea party people didn't say a word about excluding women and minorities or about Jewish settlers' attacks and acts of vandalism against Palestinians and peace activists. The Republican Party's white, religious, conservative wing was not agitated when the Israeli Supreme Court was attacked and the rule of law in Israel was trampled." Israel, Shavit added, assumed that "under the patronage of a radical, rightist America we can conduct a radical, rightist policy without paying the price." No more. Netanyahu can still get a standing ovation from the Israel lobby, but not at UCLA.
Here is a lesson for everyone:
I got the above link off the net. The very same article was in my morning paper today. The net article edited out a key paragraph at the end. This happens all the time on the net. You get edited news, presumably to make the story fit on a page...or whatever. You've been warned. Print media is superior to net media. Here is that key paragraph that the net cut:
So my best advice to Israelis is: Focus on your own election - on Jan. 22 - not ours. I find it very sad that in a country with so much human talent, the Israeli center and left still can't agree on a national figure who could run against Netanyahu and his thuggish partner, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman - a man whose commitment to democracy is closer to Vladimir Putin's than Thomas Jefferson's. Don't count on America to ride to the rescue. It has to start with you. My president is busy. (the true end of article)

Reading that again it comes to mind. This election may be the dawning of a new age, where Anglo-Protestant strength in politics and demographics is finally marginalized. Where ultra-conservative heavy handed foreign policy is vanquished. Where Israel and it's conservative U.S. backers are forced to temper their aggression, to treat Israel's neighbors as human beings. Probably the best thing that could happen to Israel is to vote out Netanyahoo and his racist ilk, to forge a lasting peace, to move Forward. It is indeed a small world.
