Just got a speeding ticket here in the golden state, ya know, the one who's going (gone!) bankrupt.......Driving my truck on a local freeway, clear, dry, light traffic. Going down one freeway (speed limit 65) I take a freeway offramp (actually where one freeway divides and another freeway branches off, so not an off ramp, just a new freeway the "new" freeway speedlimit is 55) At the "gore point" is parked a CHP with a Ladar gun, pointing at me. I pass, and he pulls me over, and cites me for 65 in a 55!!!! (what should I do, slam on my brakes the second I change from freeway 1 to freeway 2 ?!?!) I politely ask the officer about the ticket and his response is, "sorry sir, I'm just doing what they tell me to do....." I've been by there several times since and there's ALWAYS at least 1 if not more units parked there tagging people. So I contact the court about contesting the ticket and I'm told that to fight the ticket I have to pay the FULL ammount of the ticket, and they will then set a trial date. Ok, how much would that be Ms. Court Clerk? ONE THOUSAND TWENTY DOLLARS!!!!!!
Once again ladies, that's for TEN MPH OVER on a freeway!!!! They "justify" this by saying it's a "double fine zone" due to "planned roadwork" in the area by Cal-Trans. (there was NO work in progress, and there still isn't!) This is with a good driving record, imagine what a "kid" with a few tickets would get!?!?!?!? The clerk then enlightened me by saying that as of Jan 1 2009, ALL ticket prices have risen per our state legislators to BALANCE THE BUDGET!!!!! A simple fail to stop fully at a stop sign is now a MINIMUM fine of $390.00 PLUS court costs, admin. fees, and local fees (read $450. to $500.!!!!) Naturally I'm gonna fight it, but get ready, they will balance the "budget" one way or the other. I think we as a nation are WAAAAAY overdue for another tea party!!!!

Try getting a summons at the NJ Shore. Same policy in most of the kangaroo court summer towns. If you get any kind of summons during the summer months, you have to post a bond to get a trial date. Usually its the cost of the summons and they get to hold onto that until the hearing date. Good luck winning down there as well. My friend had fought with Belmar about a noise summons he got. Posted the bond, got the court date and the town cancelled and re-scheduled 3 times hoping that it would cause a conflict with his work schedule and they would get to keep the fine(bond) money. He's a firefighter and was able to make it to court each time. Pissed them off something awful. Either way, he lost in kangaroo court to a noise summons written without a noise meter which is required in Belmar.

Do you mean the windshield or the side windows? The front is the windshield, ya know? It's my understanding that you can't tint the windshield or the front side windows.
And the fine wasn't $1,000 for 10 mph over. It was for 10 mph over IN a construction zone.
But the zone wasn't in use. I've always wondered about those empty construction zones and what to do. Now I know.
After reading of Rocky's plight maybe it's time I slow down...until they balance the budget .

The one my girl got was for front side windows. From what I have read in the vehicle code, it's allowed as long as it transmits 88% of light and is uv reflective. The tint that's on there is 10% so this should be legal. Also, I do get the work zone, but, it's still $500 for 10mph over limit. I was in a car that was cited in Nevada for 15 over and that fine was $95. So California is sticking it to the average citizen to make up their budget shortfall, tax and fine your populace to death.....there is no excuse for that. Simple greed.
CA can't catch up by just raising moving violations costs and parking ticket fines. Even if they double property taxes out there, the state is burning it up and giving it away faster than it can collect it...remember the 14 child baby cannon...aka Octamom

Planned construction zone. Well that seems to apply to any road. Sooner or later every road will have construction. I can envisage it now,,, signs everywhere "planned construction zone". Just another excuse to write tickets.

Yeah the ubiquitous construction zones. Driving through Chicago they are everywhere and often not attended for months on end. They are the perfect revenue stream to finance the donut munchers wages.Typically posted on the freeways at 45 mph, people drive through them at 70-80. I was actually worried if I would have been caught simply keeping up with traffic as an out of state car or bike is the finest cop magnet there is. In Illinois you don't get out of the state if you are a foreigner until the fine is paid. Lessee... 70 in a 45, double fine for const zone. Yeah, that ought to be about $800.
But if you are a good boy and do 45-50 in the area you WILL be tail ended and die. I've seen this scenario a couple times.
Thanks for the support, I already asked about "trial by declaration" and was told it was an option, "but make sure you include a check for the FULL BAIL AMMOUNT"........By the way this is unfolding in Solano County (luckily, I don't live there!) but it is going bankrupt, so I can envision even if I "win" in court, I'll be waaaaay down the list of creditors, waiting for MY $1020.00 back.......probably ge 5 cents on the dollar.....

'S called "The Golden Rule" ladies.......the ones with the (OUR!) gold get to make the rules..........On a side note, how long until this draconian fee structure turns some riders/drivers into one's that will possibly consider running rather than getting a $1000.+ ticket? And how many people will end up with outstanding warrants due to inability or un-willingness to pay? Count them as potential "runners" who not only endanger themselves and the police, but all the rest of us, when they blow thru a red, or cross the double yelly tryin' to evade the man?
Color me pissed, don't get me wrong, the laws the law, technically I WAS EXCEEDING THE SPEED LIMIT, and I try to be big on taking personal responsibility for my actions, and try to instill that in our kids as well but, how about the "spirit" of the law, what about the concept of the punishment fitting the "crime"? When does it become an issue of entrapment when they can tag you for speed at the EXACT spot the "new" speed limit begins, doubling the fine in a "construction zone" with ZERO construction taking place, no cones, flags, "workers" nuthin'!
