Wood stoves banned on spare-air days in Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO—Air quality regulators are clamping down on wood burning stoves and fireplaces between November and February in the Bay area.
Regulators say during the cooler months, wood burning in households produces one-third of the total fine particulate matter in the air.

Regulators expect 15 to 20 spare the air days this winter. Violators face fines up to $1,000 a day. First time offenders will be issued warnings.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District adopted the new rules in July, eliciting more than 400 comments from residents.

The new rules offer exemptions for households that lack electricity or natural gas.

So what freedoms do the Enviro's want to take next?

That seems more or, at least as much, a health issue than an environmental issue. The first thing I think of is a filter for the chimney. Seems simple enough.

Living in the Bay Area has it's quirks, due to temp inversions and valleys shielded from the sea breeze, some nights the smoke clings close to the ground. And because there are numerous and sundry dipshits who burn scrap palletts etc. in their fireplace (instead of hotter burning woods) there can be very high particulate counts in the low lying air, and people with compromised respiratory systems get jacked up.....Then NO ONE gets to have a fire due to the ghetto rats who f*%k it up for everyone. First "offense" is usually a warning, 2nd offense can be $1000.00! Gotta love the peoples republik of kalifornia....... (they pretty much confine "enforcement" patrols to neighborhoods where;
A) They won't get shot
B) They can shake down homeowners for "fines" (ie. where they AREN'T burning palletts!)

Yeah, those bastards already took away my freedom to go a buck twenty on public roads, now they are taking away my right to burn whatever I want?

That's true of any major city Rocky, the city knows it can't get blood from a rock. They spend more time enforcing offenses that can generate fines from nicer places in order to keep the city coffers full. I doubt it if NYC issues many summonses in the South Bronx for recycling violations...but they actually inspect the content of the trash cans where I live (also in NYC limits) in order to issue fines.
