I'd like to see something like Colza (rapeseed) being grown in, say, Afghanistan, instead of poppies. The wretched thing grows like a weed (hey, it IS a weed...) and can be processed really easily with an old olive or wine press into oil that will make your diesel run like a charm.
Most farmers over here use it in tractors, trucks and "ahem", cars, even though it's "illegal" because anyone can grow, harvest, press, filter and refine it, thus cutting out the "Muddle man" and the Gu'mint.
It'll work on most diesels, especially ones with Bosch injection pumps.
The plant doesn't need lots of water, will adapt to a wide range of climates, and beats the shit out of opium poppies or empty fields.

To place credence on the UW system, then again many college systems, you must understand that these are all self serving groups of people drawing personal revenue from the teat of the system. Yes there has been some very good and productive work performed at the UW over the last 100 years. But bear in mind that the US Federal government many years ago has black listed the school due to its radical nature from any research and projects for technology and intellectual property development that can even remotely be associated with national defense or security.
I went to the UW Madison and have been associated with many educators and PhD’s within that system for years at the professional level. Today as well as consultation, in the occasional social setting. As I watch them get cocktailed up I often sit back and am amused and bemused with their pontification.
Here’s the nutshell dude.
It's all about a psychology to create and embrace dependency, personal respect and notoriety within their eco sphere of influence. "If we can develop data (note the empirical word develop) that proves the possibility of a scenario, we can get funding for x years.” “That'll keep me going” until I can get my PhD, create the next project, white paper, Senate hearing visit, influence legislation with my name in it, get a post within the government, a $200,000/year department head position at school xyz, and the list goes on. The oh so hated human desire for power, influence and greed in a different context is all it is. They want and need money like all of us. They just get it by sometimes creating bogus data and the media eats it up, poops it out and feeds to us. It can be looked at as a pathetic hoax and we are supposed to embrace it. Someone wrote a book years ago pertaining to the university socio intellectual mentality that succinctly pegged it. Wish I could find it now.
So many of these people live their life based on securing one state or federal grant after another. They never actually work for a living per se. They are intelligent and have beaten the system! When I ask them about the bottom line of climate change, remember that alcohol removes a lot of barriers in the human mind, they stutter a bit. Well,,, it’s all a planetary cycle thing is what really what it comes down to. Then the mindset kicks back in. But if I can prove otherwise I can make a difference. Difference to what I ask. If it’s a natural occurrence what influence can you and we the people possibly have? With their inebriated defenses down the stuttering returns.
The eco craze is just that. A self serving religion. A camaraderie for a 60’s type of love in let’s beat the man for the good of the little people. Educated yet dumb enough not to see that the root cause of the movement is not mans doing but to make them feel good.
