There are a lot of people out there who really, truly don't know what to think, because there is so much bullshit and waffle mixed in with the facts and hard-core science. There is a lot at stake for the dinosaurs who are digging in and closing their eyes, and a lot too for the people who have realised what is happening and are surfing the crest of the wave.

Speaking of burning, this is one example that is giving me an ache in my guts. I don't fear a lot, but I do fear bushfires. We have similar problems over here, but due to Global Climate Change, had no real Summer, and a wet Spring, so we missed the fire season. (No loss, I assure you..) Our well equiped flights of Canadairs and Trackers, fire-retardant loaded Fokkers and other advanced airborn fire-fighting gear sat quietly at their numerous bases.
I wish they were in California helping out.

The biggest problem is the perception of the problem, as I see it.
"Global Warming" makes it sound as if everything is going to start heating up, which it is, but often we get freezing summers, thunderstorms in the middle of Winter, no rain in Fall and baking temperatures in Spring. It makes it hard to agree with Big Al and the clique he has around him. At the same time, imagine what would have happened if Al Gore HADN'T used his weight to make that film, imagine if it was somebody who polarised even more the differences between left and right, deniers and believers ? What is happening is a global climate CHANGE, and basically it means a near total deregulation of the Weather patterns. What was only recently understood was just how much effect the Oceans had on climate, and even Climate Science is still a fairly new field, but one which has made enormous strides in the last few years.
The one thing that we have realised is just how fragile our ecosystems are here on the Earth. Only a couple of degrees average extra, and there is no more life on the planet.
A change of hundred nautical miles of the Gulf Stream, and Norway gets covered again in ice.
The evidence is totally obvious in EVERY corner of the globe that the weather is no longer playing ball, but the problem is the fearorists and big belching polluters who automatically assume that any attempt at slowing down the effect will somehow cost them money, which makes them leap aggressively into the breach with all sorts of counter-claims and whipping out of "Junk scientists" who will agree to anything for folding green.
It's also become a political fight, as you've seen by most of the posts in here, ideological wasteland, like the WW I trenches, neither side yielding, neither side attempting to negotiate or find common ground, just a bloody, useless and futile battle, while the World crashes down as they struggle for each others throats.
Kinda dumb, really.

California Fires: Sen. Harry Reid blames global warming. Sen. Barbara Boxer says they're President Bush's fault. Rather than participate in a civilized discussion, the Democrats' first impulse is to play politics.
While homes burned and hundreds of thousands were fleeing in the state next door, Senate Majority Leader Reid of Nevada moaned to the media on Tuesday that "One reason why we have the fires in California is global warming."
He tried to erase his error; but not even a U.S. senator can pull words back into his mouth if he's speaking outside of the Senate floor.
Reid's attempted denial flowed from his quick realization that he had embarrassed himself.
But instead of admitting he committed a gaffe, he made himself look sillier by protesting moments later that "I didn't say the reason the fires were burning in Southern California was global warming," which is exactly what he did say.
Also on Tuesday, California Democrat Boxer complained that the state's National Guard cannot effectively help during disasters such as the fires because Bush has sent too many men and too much equipment overseas.
"Right now, we are down 50% in terms of our National Guard equipment," Boxer said during a Senate hearing, "because they're all in Iraq, the equipment, half of the equipment."
Boxer's stance is a bit more plausible than Reid's nonsense, but it fails to hold up under scrutiny. Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter of California provides the bigger picture and it undermines Boxer's claim. Hunter, who was chairman of the Armed Services Committee for the past four years, notes that the U.S. has "2.5 million people under arms" and "less than 8% of those people in the war fighting . . . in Iraq and Afghanistan."
Rank politicization of the fires also can be found at the state level, where California Democratic Lt. Gov. John Garamendi said Tuesday that Bush's planned California visit is a "public relations" ploy that will distract firefighters from their duties. Garamendi would rather have "our National Guard back from Iraq" than to endure Bush's visit.
Garamendi might as well invite terrorists to return with the guard, because that's what many will do unless they're being occupied over there.
With a congressional approval rating of 11%, an all-time low, members of the Democratic majority seem to be growing more desperate, more willing than ever to employ rhetorical tricks.
They could save themselves politically — and do their country a favor — if they would instead focus on strengthening the U.S. and forget attacking opponents and the American character. If they don't, they're likely to get a surprise from voters next year.

The following points and graphs illustrate the "issues" I have with the "Man Made" part of Global Warming:
I have no argument with those who point out the real increase in CO2 emissions, and I have no argument with those who (correctly) point to the recent (very slight) warming of the globe. I most certainly question the causes(s) of the current vs historical global temperature changes, and I question the need to address global temperature through economic activity reduction.
To be sure, CO2 levels have increased substantially since the Industrial Revolution, and are expected to continue doing so. It is reasonable to believe that humans have been responsible for much of this increase. But (in my opinion) the effect on the environment is likely to be benign.

Here's something interesting dug up. There were several other periods in the early 20th century that showed major, catastrophic fires with weather patterns that were strange prolonging the fires. How can we not be sure we're not just going through another small phase of weather change? I'm not saying we shouldn't try to be as safe as possible, but it seems the extremes are being asked for while they are not needed.
