This is probably an entirely different topic but I'm of the opinion that colleges arn't quite as liberal as people paint them to be. Certainly teachers who teach sociology and things like that tend to be more liberal. But I think a lot of the economics teachers can be pretty to the right.
My business professor was extremely conservative, he made a lot of valid points but I think maybe he had a slight bit to much faith in the free market and companies.
My sociology teacher on the other hand was extremely liberal, I didn't really like him so much... His logic on a lot of issues tended to be kinda warped and flawed in my opinion.
Then again it's a well known fact that facts have a liberal bias.
Just browsing this section and find it hilarious that people resort to name calling. Anyways, just thought I'd ask this and see what kind of answers I get. Seems that there are other planets experiencing warming trends, with some of this being blamed on sun activities. What's the reason and are we responsible for this too?
Also, I seem to remember in the 70's, letters very similar to the global warming letters, but at that time, it was another ice age coming.
I'm not looking for smart ass comments for either side, I'm looking for serious discussion, if that's possible.
I don't know so much about the other planets warming, but I'd be interested in some more info on this as well. (Something that isn't sponsored by Mobile Exxon)
So far as my understanding of global cooling, the idea was only really ever supported by a few scientest which within a few years agreed that their hypothosis were incorrect.
Synopsis: House Bill 99-1212, which makes driving or riding in a car without a seat belt into a "primary" traffic offense, is yet another attempt to control peoples own decisions about risk taking. Research shows that when reckless drivers are forced to buckle up, they drive even more recklessly. Thus, careful drivers (who wear seat belts by choice) are endangered. Moreover, mandatory seat belt laws also increase the risk that minorities or other groups will be victimized by pretextual traffic stops.
G8RDuc, welcome to the longest thread possibly in the universe. The topic of planets warming by solar radiation has been covered previously. "Research" is your friend, here. But I'm here to help, too, so try this...
The problem is simple. We're the only planet with this type of atmosphere, at this distance from the Sun, for billions of light years. Comparing Mars, which is warming gradually due to our Sun getting hotter (and Martian axis fluctuations..) is a favorite trick of the Deniers, who forget that, er, it doesn't have an atmosphere like ours to shield solar radiation, and it's magnetic fields are also weaker. Hubble discovers galaxy-sized lenses in space
But don't let the facts stand in the way of a good oil company sponsored argument !!

The scary world of right wind dingalingism. No end in sight...carry on.
Don't know what this has to do with global warming but I'll reply anyways:
1) Because you don't agree with it, means that it's wrong and resorts to name calling. There goes any seriousness that should be taken with your response. Grow up.
2) Stop the race card. Look at it this way, for those that choose NOT to wear a seat belt and decide to risk it, when they do get into an accident, it's our money that will end up paying for their EMT ride, treatment at the hospital, etc because they felt the need to NOT wear a seatbelt. Driving a car is not a right, if you choose to do it, follow the laws. If the law is to wear a seat belt, do it. No one is forcing you to drive a car, you do it by choice. If you really feel that it's another way for "minorities" to get pulled over, then you have other issues.

Thank you for those sources, Kiwi. Don't you think with the Sun getting hotter would attribute to our "global warming" problem? After all, solar flares do cause problems here, why wouldn't the sun warming cause a problem?
Don't know what this has to do with global warming but I'll reply anyways: G8RDuc, If you have come to espouse neocon mentality, racism, violence or Bush cheerleading then you may as well ignore me now because I am gonna call you a name or two.
I am not overly hopeful that you will grasp too many global concepts or think about, and comment upon, international matters too seriously because you say you dont get a connection between seatbelt history and global warming denial. I tried to make points from history and lessons of the past so folks could connect the dots.
I wouldn't usually do this but these simple folks have congregated in unusual numbers and caused a wave of racist fascism wanton religious ignorance and incompetence that has threatened my happy home and way of life.
If your gray matter is black and white I suggest you tune me out now. I dont have much patience for people who think I cannot dislike fascists Americans but not love America or that they own America even if they soil it's laws and have really big bangs.
You could try your social commentary prowess here by telling us what you think of the tobacco industry spokes people doing what global warming deniers are doing. Do you see a parallel?
One of your Supreme Court Justices once said that he couldn't define pornography but he knew it when he saw it. Do you really need a definition of global pollution and its drastic effects and culminating impact?
1) Because you don't agree with it, means that it's wrong and resorts to name calling. There goes any seriousness that should be taken with your response. Grow up. There has been a devolution into the realm of name calling. I assure you it's not one sided. There is also a label that suits certain folks that one cannot refer to as name calling, such as; dirty, rotten liar, stupid, incompetent hypocrite, cowardly draft dodger or big, fat idiot. Sometimes these terms fit so well that it's too challenging or time consuming to think of other, descriptive verbiage for the scoundrel at hand.

Well, at least you noticed the race element of that article. So many wouldn't have noticed or cared. Still, lets face it, the car industry was a nightmare to deal with when it came to acknowledging the horrible results of car crashes because they were obsessed with image and sales. They put more money defeated legislation and safety crusaders then the money need to improve safety for the buyers of their cars! Think about it. Try to tell me that this SAME bullshit isn't flourishing in other fields.
I was asking folks to make a link, draw a paralell, connect the dots, put two and two together, whatever...
G8RDuc, it does, see the above links, and the links that they in turn link too, but we have our atmosphere, and most importantly, our magnetic fields to thank for life on Earth. OK, the airburst nuclear testing in the 50's and 60's blew gaping holes in the ozone layer, coupled with abundent use of CFCs, which, you may have noticed, have stopped being used, and "oh lordy !" the hole hasn't gotten any bigger, and may even be slowly reducing in size..
But of course, mankind has no effect on our environment....
5.2.2 Effects on the Atmosphere and Climate
Although not as directly deadly as fallout, other environmental effects can be quite harmful. 5.2.2.1 Harm to the Ozone Layer
The high temperatures of the nuclear fireball, followed by rapid expansion and cooling, cause large amounts of nitrogen oxides to form from the oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere (very similar to what happens in combustion engines). Each megaton of yield will produce some 5000 tons of nitrogen oxides. The rising fireball of a high kiloton or megaton range warhead will carry these nitric oxides well up into the stratosphere, where they can reach the ozone layer. A series of large atmospheric explosions could significantly deplete the ozone layer. The high yield tests in the fifties and sixties probably did cause significant depletion, but the ozone measurements made at the time were too limited to pick up the expected changes out of natural variations.
This is a good source for atmospheric info, especially the Ozone layer.
I've popped this in as well, if you have the time to read it through. It's pretty amazing stuff. Some people who have been, er, brainwashed isn't REALLY the term, but you get the idea, like to sneer at Wikipedia being used as a source, and claim it's "All a Liberal plot..", but I think it's brilliant, and an amazing thing for beating back the shuffling morrass of ignorance. Use it's massive links to convince yourself of the neutrality of the article, and just enjoy all that knowledge.

Sure I noticed it, I think the race card played in so many instances is total nonsense. Since you didn't expand on it, and judging by your email to get people just to notice it, you don't believe in the race card on that particular subject either. So you're blaming the automotive giants for trying to have seatbelt laws passed? It's been a law here in Florida for ages, and thank God it has been. But, still the idiots that die on the interstate always seem to have something in common, no seat belts. Like I said, it's not a right to have a car and be able to drive, it's a privy. If you don't like the rules, don't drive. Back to the topic at hand.

Kiwi,
I don't disagree that I'm sure man has had an effect on the environment. My main "problem" is the amount of blame man takes for this effect. I find it very suspicious that global warming has hit the forefront in an election year. I also find it ironic that the Earth has always been a changing planet. I definitely think we should be as efficient as possible and as safe as possible, but I still have doubts that we are the main cause of a warming trend, considering that we are still climbing out of the last mini ice age. There are so many variables to take into account with why the atmosphere changes occur, including vulcanism, tilt of the planet, continent placements, the suns output and of course, activity on the earth. I will read those links you posted above.
Are you saying that things 50 years ago are the cause of the current warming trend? And that nothing to do with today's activities are related to the current warming trend? (if indeed there is a warming trend).
1) Don't start to insult me because of your ignorant personality and low intelligence level.
2) Do you honestly believe that it would be smarter for the automotive companies to leave themselves open to lawsuits from people injured in car accidents because they weren't wearing their seat belts? They're trying to protect themselves. Selfish? Yes, but it's to be expected. If you told me that you wouldn't do the same, I would think even less of you then I do right now.
As a side note, do NOT insult me again. If you cannot hold a civil conversation, maybe your mom and dad shouldn't let you use their computer.
The last 100 years have seen more change on the surface of the planet than at any time previously in a similar time scale. Possibly since the Dinosaurs dying off, either due to the comet hitting the Earth, or a massive volcanic eruption like Taupo in NZ, the surface of our planet hasn't had such a dramatic shock. And guess who's responsable ?
The Industrial Revolution started it, but if you look at the last 100 years, hell, even the last 50, what an unbelievable change we have wrought on our home planet.
And it's not stopping....call it the "snowball theory", once it starts rolling, it's going to get bigger and bigger as it gathers momentum and accumulates mass. We may be able to divert it, or reduce some of it's impact, but it's already got a lot of weight, and it's moving far, far faster than anyone had predicted, except those dismissed so casually as "Doomsayers"....
What's funny is that those who do not have the intelligence to hold a conversation usually resort to insults. It's usually a sign of someone that hasn't completed 2nd grade. Thank you, XFBO, for that little piece of advice.
