Pierre - I am pretty sure that the rider on the Ducati single is Paul Smart.
I was wondering if it could be Smart... especially because of the full page picture in the SportClassic brochure... but its face look pretty different don't you mind ?
Pierre - I have seen the picture somewhere else and I only 'know' it is Smart because the publication said so.
Look at that chin!
I am not saying you are wrong, but I saw Paul Smart race (I lived in England then)many many times from 1967 onwards and I dont remember him wearing a helmet that had anything other than the two stripes down the middle. Back then the simple designs on the helmets were like a signature as everyone looked the same in black leathers, so the riders did not change the design on their helmets every 5mins like the modern riders.

I also seem to remember him as one of the first UK riders of the time to wear a Bell full face helmet, which used to make him easy to spot on the race track. I believe the first ones we ever saw was when the team of American riders came over for the Easter 'Battle of the Atlantic' race series, where in the first series the Americans rode BSA Triples and the English Triumph Triples. I think there were about 6 riders in each team, the noise was fantastic. I am fairly sure Paul Smart was on the UK team, the only American rider I can remember is Don Emde (not sure of spelling that). That series went on for several years (but not with BSA's and Triumph's) the last race I saw live was at Mallory Park where a rider called Kenny Roberts showed everyone how to ride a bike, even when it snowed.
I will look at the collection of race programmes I have from that era and see if I can find any pictures of Smart in a different helmet.
