Default Rubber Inlet Manifold

I've got an 01 KLR650 - it has a rubber inlet manifold. This has got to mess up the airflow into the big pump.

Has anyone tried changing it for metal? Would love to know before I start tinkering.

The rubber intake manifolds on bikes serve as a heat and vibration insulator. I'd hesitate to change it for these reasons.
