Hi guys, I am normally a sportsbike rider and presently have a Ducati 749S which I love but due to a variety of reasons I will now sell.
Over the last 2 weeks I went along and tried out Supermotard type riding on a paved track. Although the KTM I used was a road bike with ne special preparation, I totaslly enjoyed the experience. I feel that this is something I would like to get in to.
And so the dilemma, which bike to choose?
Two guys at the track were very quick and their bikes impressive. One was a Honda and the other a Yamaha. Both I believe were actually motocross bikes with mods made for supermotard. Is that normally a viable option or is it best to buy an out and out straight from the box motard bike?
Both of those bikes pulled hard out of corners and that was the kind of thing I would hope to find.(450cc bikes I think)
What makes and models would you suggest I take a look at?
I am based in Spain if that might have any baring on the models open to me.
Motocross-based bikes (Honda, Yamaha) are great for the track, but don't make the best everyday-driver. Their maintenance schedule is too much for regular riding. If you're going to be on the streets, buy something made for that. The KTM 690 or Husky 610 are ideal for everyday riding.
You mentioned motocross-specific bikes converted, and that's what we generally see, Honda & Yamaha.
Mind you, I own a KTM 625SMC street bike as well as a KTM 250 SX-F which is only used for supermoto. Over here, we see KTM's on the track a lot!
Now that is a nice looking bike.
I have noticed that sometimes supermotard racing involves part paved track and part diry all included in 1 lap? Is it the same in the U.S? I must say all paved track is more appealing and when I fancy dirt riding I just head out to the hills.
the easiest way into Supermoto is with an out of the box SM specific bike like a KTM, Husky or Husaberg. buying an MX bike and converting it is costly. you could buy used but go for one that is already set up.
like Gerg i have a KTM. mines a 450SMR. it has been trouble free and runs/handles great.
SM is the most fun you'll have on a bike.
Interesting point, right out of the crate and off you go...that has to make a lot of sense.
My big concern now though is getting used to sliding one of those baby's in the turns and if dirt will be involved, hitting jumps at something more than "pussy" speed!
Taking a foot of the footrest when cornering will be a whole new world as I usually push down on inner footrest when cornering. This could be a very interesting learning curve!
it will come with time. you can ride these roadrace style but it's not "how it's done". foot out, on the gas, sliding around is what it's about. you'll fall alot at 1st. usually it's no big deal since the speeds are lower and the bikes are very durable. talk to people at trackdays, follow fast guys as much as possible, ride as often as time/money/family will allow. you'll get the hang of it.
Good advice my friend, only problem with that is the fact I live in Southern Spain!
That must be terrible, the weather, the motorcycles, and so on.
With the much larger concentration of riders though there should be a few good schools out there, maybe even a Motard specific one. I'm sure it's only a mater of time before there are motard days starting here at the schools.
