StlWalnut took an evil tumble during the Vet Open main event at Springfield IL, this weekend.
Radiologist counts 12 breaks to 10 bones - eight ribs, two with two breaks, collar bone, and shoulder blade. Walnut's spending his second night at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. He will probably go home to Saint Louis tomorrow.
He's in good spirits, mostly because he's always an upbeat, positive guy, but maybe also because he's being liberally medicated for pain. (Go Vikes!)
One of the amazing things about his trip to the trauma center was that the nurses DIDN'T cut his leathers off. Somehow they got Walnut out of his signature reverse skeleton one piece road racing leathers with only a little bit of pushing and pulling. Perhaps it's easier to get out of a set of leathers if your right shoulder is free to float around, unencumbered by ribs and clavicles?
Serious bummer. But atleast the leathers are ok...j/k Get well soon Walter!

I didn't see the crash happen, but I saw the leaders coming up on him and splitting to either side, then I saw him laying on the track. It didn't look good.
Well, StlWalnut had to spend another night in the Springfield Hotel. It seems the staff is concerned about a small pneumothorax in the right side of his pleural cavity - this is a kind of bubble where his lung has separated a little bit from the chest wall. The only treatment for it is to monitor it with periodic x-rays to make sure it doesn't grow into a full-on collapsed lung.
StlWalnut and his family are hopeful that his x-ray this morning will be good enough to allow his release.
rommi said they're inserting a chest tube and he won't get out until SATURDAY! i would like to know if those dudes made a clean pass or they had NO room. the more i think about it the more it pisses me off. that's one of the reasons i race the vet class. i did not hear this first hand. but i was told one of the dudes said walter was trying to race with him as he passed. i know walter well enough to bet my life on this to be false. if indeed he said that, that tells me he did not have the room to pass. if so, i hope they enjoy that piece of plastic. and if i wasn't a peewee, i would give him a handful of stuffing the next time i saw him. i'm childish like that.
Yeah, I talked to walnut this morning - the chest tube goes in today. They use it to create a suction, and let the lung fill up the pleural cavity so that it will heal up. It's a pretty straight-forward procedure, and it's supposed to be very effective - they just didn't want to cut the hole if they didn't have to.
One of the two guys that tangled with Walter pulled a bone-head move at that same corner with me on the first lap of the heat race - charged in there without enough room to get around on the outside, and ended up taking a trip through the grass. Turn 4 is not an ideal place to pass on the outside.
I know there is a funny one-liner that ties these two quotes together but for the life of me I can't come up with it right now. Anyway, get well and back on the bike.

i'm home and doing well, going back to work tomorrow.
still stiff and, at times uncomfortable, but, as always, still smiling.
i'll attempt to answer the important questions:
colt 45 and vicodan mix surprisingly well
i think i'll be modifing my leathers with some anatomically correct white paint,
the chest tube wasn't nearly as bad as i thought it would be.
i'll still be around, you can't get rid of me that easily
