Default Switching To A 180

Can I switch to a 180/50 from a stock 190/50 without having to make additional adjustments? Is a 190/55 a better alternative? I am new to this and trying to keep it simple for my second track day. Thanks for your input. Here are the bikes:

Depends upon the rear wheel width (among other things).

Your 999 should have come with an OEM 5.5" rear rim and a 190/50 ZR17 fitted (I believe). Why Ducati does this...most of us don't know...but the better tire for a 5.5" rim is a 180.

Not sure what the Honda rear tire width is, but if it is a 5.5" rim, then the same logic should apply.

The 180 should help your Duc corner better because of a better fit, without pinching the tire so that the profile changes.

I am by no means an expert...but this is what I've been told. Others feel free to chime in!

Stealership says the Honda OEM rear rim is 6". OEM rear tyre is 190/50. Should I then consider a 180/55??

No use a 190 on a 6.0 to keep the same profile. You can use a 180 on a 6.0 but look at it this way, a 180 fits a 5.5" and a 190 is ten mm wider, which is about a half an inch, which is how much wider the rim is on a 6.0". If you run a 180 on a 5.5 it will have a slightly flater profile. Some guys do, but a 190 was made to fit a 6.0".

Are you suggesting a 190/50 for the Honda's 6" rear wheel?

What he is trying to say is that it will make a difference.
Not a detrimental difference, but it will affect the handling a bit.

Honesty entire books have been written about what you are asking.

My recommendation is to keep things the way you expect them to be (i.e. stock) until you have had a chance to really dig into the subject.

I found this to help us with the topic:

http://www.sportrider.com/tech/tires/146_0206_size/

This article seems to support 180/50 as a proper size for the 999 and a 190/50 as the correct size for the CBR1000RR.

Says exactly what I did earlier. Yes put a 190 on the 6.0 rim.

I think you would want a 180/55. Some conversation about this. http://www.1000rr.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1930

I have a 190/55 Rennsport on my RR and I love it, but it's not a daily use tire. I have other bikes for that purpose.
