I think it has much more to do with our society today vs twenty or thirty years ago. How much more information are we getting vs back then? I don't think anyone is asking for more than they used to, we are just hearing about every detail now. Now it is in real time, from the other side of the globe via hundreds of different channels.
The riders aren't asking for the bikes to make up for their lack of "riding hard", they are asking for a better setup so they can make their "hard riding" more effective.
Why do we average joes get better tires or suspension components? because we want the best bike under us we can get, because that translates to more confidence, lower lap times and a more enjoyable experience on the track.
...what ever happened to just going out and riding hard.
Like Nicky fukn Hayden! He's had his whiney moments but for the most part has just put his head down and raced as hard as he could on what he was given.

True statement. Maybe that's why he's been able to keep a job with sub par results for most of his GP career except for his impressive podium streak back in 2005-2006. He's got a great work ethic.
20 years ago there wasn't Twitter, Facebook, or cameras on everyone's phone. Riders have always looked to improve their machine and made demands on teams to improve. We just know about it more easily today.

When has a racer not wanted more of everything. The mantra: We want it all and we want it now, was never more applicable than in racing.
Go talk to any club level mechanic on up to the pros and see if their rider requests are any different.
TBF I think they all have a valid arguement to some degree, although I would have thought Rea would have wanted more bhp. Biaggi's bike clearly isn't the bhp king it was a few seasons ago. He was having trouble keeping Rea behind him and the Honda is noticeably slow compared to the BMW.
Rossi, TBF all the riders want chassis improvements but I think the verdict is still out there as to whether it is the bike alone or the rider as well. Burgess etal have certainly alluded to it being Rossi's age and riders at the end of their careers in MGP simply do not have the flexibility to adapt and the drive of their earlier years. For sure the Ducati isn't at the sharp end of things TBF.

We go to track days and we look forward to dicing with our friends.
These guys only want to 'get away at the front'.
Biaggi and Co should welcome the tight racing.
Guess that is the difference between professional racing and playtime aka trackdays.
This isn't our day job and in our day job, certainly in mine, I always want to be the best, have the best tools, and the best support and the best results.
As I've said to many an ex-GF I'm not your source of entertainment and even though they are ours it is still their day job.
I like Nicky's style too but he probably would have been better served to speak his mind more often and be less politically correct behind closed doors.

He's really the only #2 rider on a team to win a Championship until Lorenzo did the same two years ago. What other #2 rider has put together that kind of effort for so long?

Biaggi on the V4 Aprilia - "We are the ranking leaders thanks to consistently good placements, but we need to improve our bike, which seems to have lost technical power compared to our rivals."
Oh dear......but I'm not going to say it.
BTW, watch Checa pass Biaggi in the Championship and take it again this year. Any takers?

I think Biaggi and Checa are on their own. Ducati isn't developing the old bike anymore and Aprilia probably, again, are suffering under the bean counters wrath. The performance differences for both bikes compared to the last few seasons is noticeable.
