Default "Safe" to ride on these tires?

Hello all,

I do not have a street bike anymore and my Aprilia RS250 has been tucked away in the garage since August 2010.
I am hoping to get back to at least some track days this year and am making a list of "items" I need to purchase so I can get back to the track.

I will be the first to note that "saving" money on tires is stupid because they are the only contact to the pavement, that said the tires on my bike have 1 track day on them. I attended the Corner speed racing school and had 2 sessions of medium pace followed by a sprint race.

Although the tires are "brand new" they have been sitting in the garage (on the bike) through two winters.

Are they still safe to ride or should I just chuck them and get a new set?

Thank you

Unless those tires were stored in sealed garbage bags, don't do it. If you crash, you will kick yourself.

Besides, new tires are so nice. Don't deprive yourself.

When in doubt there is no doubt. Chuck 'em, don't spoon them on the bike, even if selling it.

Default tired tires

Money is tight for sure, but throwing away your bike in the first corner will only compound the problem. Don't chance it.

I can't believe you guys.

Seriously, I'll take those tires from you. I'll pay for shipping of course.

since my bike has so many mods,i was planning on tip toeing the 1st few trips anyway.
not knowing what too expect from the tires will help keep my speeds down while testing.
i know at the minimum i will have to revalve front and rear.

I suppose the tires we by at dealers and online are just fresh as a daisy all the time, and could never have sat in a warehouse for months or years.

FIFO anyone?

Unless you are constantly buying the latest and greatest, a niche product like motorcycle tires might have age on them before you even spoon them on.

Sheesh, what would be the harm in taking it easy for a few laps with the old tires?

Seems like a waste of money TBH.

Shoot two years ain't so bad, I would be more worried about the temperatures they've been exposed to more than the age. I've seen too many pics of slicks that have dropped below freezing and split. But two year old tires in even a semi climate controlled environment I wouldn't waste. Take it easy for a couple ro rescrub them fuggers and let it eat. Unless they have been well into freezing temps then chuck them. That's my $.02

As long as there is no dry rot and you use warmers you should be okay at an intermediate pace. I'd say forget it if you're A group but then A group guys can ride around problems anyway. When I bought my track ZX-7R I got it from a guy that had brand new Dunlop Qualifiers (the old version) on the bike but the guy had the bike sitting outside in sub 0 degree weather for 2 winters.

When I got the bike the tires had the nipples on them but the tread had cracks in them (I didn't notice until after I pulled them off the bike to change tires). I still got two track days out of them without a hint of slide.

If they were out of the sun for most of the time; give them a shot..just my .02..most modern tires will outperform the skill level of non professional riders...

Really? No hint of slide from aged Q1s at your track days?

Was that part of your recommendation..., or was it a disclaimer on the breadth of your tire expertise?

Yep. Where I am, there is no choice. Even inside my garage it will dip down to -20 during winter. My extra tires are on a shelf out there along with all of my bikes, which happen to have tires on them as well. I've never had a tire problem or issue, street or track with either Power Race dot's or Pilot Power's.

If you are experienced, Expert/Professional class racer then certainly there is no need to even read anything I write.

You know tires have a date code, right?

Yes, but for any manufacturing operation you have First In, First Out. You are assured to get the oldest tires of that brand/size in the warehouse. I would be amazed if manufacturers ever scrapped tires after two years, just have a sale every so often to reduce unwanted inventory.

Ok, dealers and warehouses have tires sit for two years, yes.

But the tires in this thread AREN'T brand new - they were heat cycled maybe a dozen times before they sat in a garage for two years, pressurized, and weighted.

In my experience, tires with two track days on them aren't as fun to ride on AT A TRACK DAY as new tires. They go off faster. I find myself doing a ride through halfway through a session to cool them down so they don't act greasy.

I rode on two year old race tires once, and they were even worse! No way I would waste track day fees on a bike with questionable tires.

If those tires have lots of tread left, sell them to a squid for $100, and get some new tires.
