Thanks Barry... I always enjoy our discussions... it's a shame I can't say
the same about others who enjoy attacking me or my bike...
Actually it wasn't a pity... because Honda was dead set against the
team going back the screamer but Doohan threaten HRC... (after all
Mick was the hottest property and Yamaha was always in the wings with
a standing offer)...
Technically speaking the screamer was slightly faster due to the fact it
allowed the volume of air available in the air box to recover before the next
cylinders emptied it again... it wasn't faster due to the 180º offset crank
pins... it's possible that air box volume issues is behind Ducati's decision to
offset the 990 crank pins... it's shame the manufactures are so secretive...
Quote MCN:
"Doohan felt he'd become stale during '96 by simply going
through the motions to wrap up his third straight crown, and
he needed something to rekindle the old fire. He found it in
a return to his "screamer" non-Big Bang NSR motor,
notoriously difficult to control.
It looked like a gamble, but whatever it was it worked
with devastating effect. He even enjoyed the pre-season
testing where he obliterated his rivals' times, leaving
everyone wondering how they were going to beat him even
before the first green light in Malaysia.
Defeat was rare, but when it was inflicted Doohan found it
as hard to take as ever. Victory is everything to Doohan, in
every race, !IS his brilliant victory III the British GP confirmed.
Settling for the top seven finish he needed for the title was
never an option for him and he rode the wheels off his bike
to win the race, and the championship, from the front."
