No kidding. That's terrible. Hit by an RV on the way to Sturgis, according to his riding partners.

Unhappy

That is genuinely terrible news. Regardless of what you felt about the Buell effort, Rossmeyer's involvement in this and other aspects of our sport definitely made life better for a lot of people, and he was an extremely charitable man as well.

It is things like this that are making me think whether it is time to stop road riding and maybe move permanently to the track.

Bruce supported the sport and was a true biker and a gentleman.
R.I.P. Bruce, God speed.

It is sad and God rest his soul.

But if you read the accident, seems he was trying to pass someone that was about to make a left turn. Shame. And no gear.

No helmet . I will never understand this . At eight years of age my skull was cut open from top to bottom as it bounced off the pavement when a car hit my GT-80 , and I've worn a helmet ever since . Even though I was only eight I still think I was stupid .

My deepest condolences to the survivors of Mr. Rossmeyer...

"His death is going to change the entire motorcycle industry,"
Woodruff said. "You have movers and shakers, and Bruce was definitely
a mover and shaker. He made things happen. You lose someone like that
and it creates a big void."

True... I worry that each bare headed biker death may also spark a
National Helmet debate and thats going to change the entire industry as well...

A guy I know had ridden his whole life without a helmet, one day him and his girlfriend were riding along on the highway on his Vespa and got a flat rear tire, he crashed and died on the spot. I think she ended up dieing in the hospital later. It's amazing how they avoided serious injury or death all this time only to have happen to them in their 60's.

But I support people's right to choose on the helmet issue.

RIP, thats really sad news.

IDK what's more sad, someone who's really helped the motorcycle community dying, or that his "rebellious" ways (no helmet) was probably the contributing factor to his death.

If seat belt use is mandatory for people in cars, so should helmet wear for motorcyclists. Riding without a helmet is as irresponsible to me as drinking and driving. You may very well get away with it forever but in both cases the odds are increasingly against you that you will eventually get bitten in the ass.

At the risk of seeming disrespectful, I think that he made two completely avoidable errors that day. One, he was riding without a helmet. Two, he was behind a truck pulling a trailer that was slowing down, which should have given him some indication that the truck was fixing to do something, like turn maybe, and instead of exercising caution, he just pulled out and tried to pass it without sizing up the situation first.

Sad.....in fact, doubly sad because it was easily prevented.

I couldn't agree more. A part of me can't help but also think there might be some karmic irony here as well in that this poor guy made a small fortune purveying the fantasy of freedom, rebelliousness and macho toughness to tens of thousands of bankers, lawyers, accountants, firemen, construction workers and anyone else who wanted to "pretend" to be a bad-ass biker dude on the weekend. I wonder how many of these folks who "bought into" the illusion of this fantasy he sold every day died with their helmets off......

Out here in Wisconsin it seems that no one ever wears a helmet when riding a harley. I guess I have no problems with them choosing their 'right', but what goads me is that when they do not have insurance and have an accident (ie head trauma), we end up paying their medical bills for what could have been less costly or preventable for that matter. And people wonder why out helath insurance premiums are so high......

I also support people's right to choose... after all this is America.. they have
the right to buy their own property and build their own roads to ride bare
headed all they want... but on the perverted *public* highways they must
choose to don the skid lid or face more helmet laws because cagers will seek
protection under the law from wrong full death suits...

I, too, fully support the "people's right to choose on the helmet issue". And I also fully support the people's right to not support those who choose to not ride with a helmet. Riders should choose one of two categories to operate a motorcycle on public roads. HELMET or NO HELMET. Those who choose to pick the No Helmet option should be issued special license plates which would negate ANY medical assistance in the event of an accident. Let the rider make the choice and live with that choice. No one would force a rider to pick one option or the other. It would be up to the rider to make the decision for themselves and bet their life on it. Totally free decision.....and the denial of medical assistance would be mandatory and the rider would have to sign and have notarized forms signifying full acceptance of the terms. Under those terms, let the people "choose on the helmet issue".
