Default Cycling VS Motorcycling

I started Cycling last year to get more fit for riding the motorcycle and discovered that I enjoy Cycling as much if not more than riding the Motorcycle. Hopefully I haven't annoyed you guys with the cycling threads but most of the pro racers ride bicycles to train and for good reason. So I put together my personal evaluation of the two. Let me know what you guys think.

Outright performance - Motorcycle wins

Style - Motorcycle wins

Emphasize the rider more than the machine - Cycling wins

Better for fitness - Cycling wins

Better for environment - Cycling wins

More rewarding - Cycling wins by promoting healthy lifestyle

Cost Effective - Cycling wins

Science involved - Motorcycle wins

Thrill factor - Motorcycle wins

Playboy factor; What the chicks dig - Cycling wins

Cycling = 6
Motorcycles = 4

....don't get me wrong, I love my motorcycle. But this cycling stuff is not to be slept on. If you haven't tried it, get a group of friends, rent some bikes and plan a trip.

Rediscovered road riding/"racing" this past Spring and haven't looked back (except for the cars about to punt me into the ditch) . Got back into shape REALLY quickly . I just have to make sure I don't get too involved in cycle tech b/c it can get very expensive ; a full CF racer can run $8000+ . My cheap $500 aluminum will do ... for now . Btw , definitely agree that chicks dig the roadrace image more than motos ... the right chicks anyway .

I don't know. Some of these handmade Italian carbon bikes are pretty stylish so I'd call that a push. I think the two complement each other. The better your fitness the better you ride the motorbike. You weigh less, stronger etc.

I like your bicycling posts. They are nice change from the regular dross that on this forum.

You neglected probably one of the most important factors, safety.

Everyone's in a hurry these days and bicyclist are just in the way.

Motorcycles = Win

what are your thoughts?

I would say that Motorcycling has a higher fatality rate though. I'd give the edge to cycling too. unless you ride the motorcycle on the track only, then I'd say Motorcycles win.

Default bikes

I have been bicycle commuting everyday to work this summer, Ie last three months here in Wisconsin. I have a GT mountain bike of the old Chromoly frame style, no suspension and it works great. I just picked up an aluminum road bike and am getting used to the clip ons. How do you stop this thing? It is trouble some because when you take your feet out out of the clip ons, the smooth bottom shoes do not allow you to stand on the slippery little clips/pedals to get off the seat! However the advantages of the aluminum bike on the road are dramatic. Acceleration and hill climbing are easy. Less rotating mass etc. I like the bicycle so much that the duc didnt even get its plates renewed this summer. Its for sale if anyone is looking for a 98 748. I still have the track only 748 and have had it out twice so far.
Bikes verses cycles, I would have to give em an even up on the scale provided. The ability to go at the same pace as cars and trucks makes motorcycles much more safe in general use. The health advantages are many to riding a bike. My wife thinks my commitment to riding the bike is inspiring to her to the point of getting back into running! I feel I will benefit more from that than she will. Previous posters have all been right on the money in my perspective. Ride safe Brad.

Heck yeah! Great post.

You can adjust your cleats under your shoes to lessen the clearance when you're clipped into the pedals. That should get rid of the slippery feeling. I had the same problem and it's gone now.

Same speed as cars not possible on the bicycle???? Dude, I've hit 38mph with a tailwind upstate NY. I've passed cars! lol

My wife is starting to take her fitness more seriously too and is even thinking about using my diet because of how quickly I got results.

I'm with you, I only did one track day this year and only put about 100 street miles on the bike total. I've done 800 miles on the bicycle in 3 months.

I used to ride MTB back when they came out, then I stopped after an accident on a local trail which left me with a knackered knee (and I knackered the other crashing a VFR so I am even).
Would I take it up again? No, cycling doesn't appeal to me anymore.
I exercise daily and I hike on our local mountains and I am completely happy with it. Not to mention I can take the dogs along...

I'm not a road biker but mountain biking is great fun. Similarities to aggressive MC riding (twisties or track) and single track riding I've found are:

1) you have to stay extremely focused on the path in front of you
2) body positioning and braking ability are very important
3) faster is better
4) crashing can be bad in both cases, I've suffered more bodily damage on a mountain bike

Also similar to motorcycling, I can't just go out and tool around. I've ridden with slow bikers on single track trails (my wife) and it just isn't near as much fun. Wide open is my preference.

Drooling . But one strategically thrown up rock from a car in front and that beautiful frame is done . So far , I've met fewer boneheads cycling than motoing .

Now that was phuuh-neee!

Depending on the context, both leather and spandex can be equally, outrageously gay. Out where I live, we have a substantial number of weekend warrior, Lance Armstrong wanna bees. I'd laugh at the sight of these characters, many of whom look like neon colored sausages riding their expensive machinery, except they so frequently disrupt our back road traffic without consideration to other vehicles (be they motorcycles or cars) that they can be hard to like. A significant number of them ride with such an obviously inflated sense of self-importance that truly borders on the ridiculous. On the other hand, I greatly respect those cyclists who are truly dedicated to their sport and put in the miles that makes them legitimate practitioners as opposed to extravagantly over-equipped poseurs.

Regardless of the sporting activity, I'm an advocate of putting in the time, be they miles, practice, training, etc. before investing in "HAY! Look-at MEE!" levels of equipment, clothing, ancillaries and accessories. But hey, that's just me. To each his own..........

I have a mountain bike, a highly-modded Cannondale Super V, in Cuba and a Bianchi Eros road bike in Ft. Lauderdale. When I have one-day trips out of FLL I carry my flight bag, my suitcase, and a few shirts to Operations the day before and I ride my bike to work. I love being able to commute on my bike and it's a great way to get some mileage in. Plus the flight attendants think I'm cool.

We just got a Visla puppy in Cuba and the thing needs to run every day. I took her out with my mountain bike the other day and she kept up with me in the low gear. Okay, let's see what she's got. A taller gear and holy sheeps**t she's right there, shift gears, she's still keeping up with me. Aww man, now I know that I have to get some stronger legs or this little 12-week old puppy is gonna leave me in the dust soon...literally!

Turbo - you gotta PM me your diet!

Annoyed? Nah! We're all just wondering why u don't just ask Hubert for his number and call him or take it to PMs. Or better yet, get a room for you and him!

Bicyclists aren't bad, I like to fake like I'm gonna open my cardoor as they're coming by just to keep them guessing.
