Default Vintage NYPD Bikes

Friend of mine did some digging through the old negatives at work and came up with these old bike pictures that the NYPD has. Thought some would be enjoyed here. They date back to the early 1900's
First NYPD Motorcycle early 1900's. Notice the Flatiron building in the background which is on 23rd Street/5th Avenue in NYC.

1920's NYPD sidecar

A review of bikes at the old NYPD Headquarters

And Piaggio scooters!

Seriously.... since 2004 - they purchased 300 Piaggio BV200 scooters just before the Republican National Convention.

They also have a few of the Vectrix electric scooters and from what I read recently, they are in the process of buying a bunch of the Piaggio MP3 hybrid scooters (3-wheeled). They are expensive, but get 141 MPG!

Add to that a few Segway's
The Piaggio's have been popular though. They replaced an older scooter which the name escapes me. The Piaggio's are definitely an upgrade from the older version they replaced. They're used for summons details mostly and also for mobility during parades and demonstrations. The function of the scooter cops is entirely separate and different than anything the Highway Patrol officers perform.
Each precinct has a couple of the Piaggio scooters, then get called in en masse for certain events.
The Hybrid Vectrix is a 2 wheeled scooter.

This can't be the 1920's - that passenger is listening to his iPod.

Great shots.
