Thumbs down Yamaha R1 Oil Cap!

What the hell is up with the cap for the Yamaha R1. I can't get the damn thing open... looks like it needs a special tool and the Yamaha dealer in town doesn't have it.

Need to do my oil change....How do I get the damn thing open? Been trying all sorts of screwdrivers and shit... but no luck. Any ideas?

Maybe it's just a "virtual" oil cap. It is, after all, a "virtual V4" according to some, lol

Cool OIL Cap

Do you have a picture... this I have to see.

Cousin's 2003 Aprilia Tuano oil cap is under another piece that you have to take off so you can check / add oil. Not the best of designs for sure...

Can you post a pic of it? That would be most helpful.

why would a Japanese manufacturer make it difficult to change the oil? I mean doesn't it sound fishy?

if its like the previous generation R1, the plug doesnt have the normal raised tab that you grip with your thumb and fingers, but a recessed slot instead. almost like the tab being inverted. i just used the handle of a rubber coated wrench and put the leading edge in the slot and turned it. the first time it will be tight as a 13 year old virgin................or so im told. not difficult.

For $25 I'll machine a 1/2 square in the cap so you can use a 1/2 rachet...

Hammer and screwdriver did it... piss poor design man.... fire the dumabss who designed a freakin inverted cap....

Didn't help that the old owner spray painted over it....

All is well that ends well... new oil and coolant... pumped for upcoming track day!

the OEM is a great design, the lack of a tab discourages it from coming loose (think of the associated catastrophe) the more low profile & flush your cap is the better

you may consider drilling a pin hole in the lip for saftey wire, some track orgs may require, you can buy one pre drilled if you want to get all blingy

I would avoid anything that has an extruding tab, far to easy for your ex or the kids down the street to mess with! not to mention a low side

I would get something as flush as possible (like the OEM)... Harris has a flushy with a protected tab, rizoma & sato make a flushy but look a lil complicated, the sato even comes with a removal tool... which brings us back to the OEM which can be removed with a quarter

The oem can't be removed with a quarter. It's a pain in the ass. Have you tried? The design and quality is dogshit.

I've gotten over it, but it shouldn't be this poor.
