Biker Britches ready to ride

WILTON, Iowa — A trio who started a motorcycle-themed underwear company hope it will help them ride out unemployment.
Inside Connie Fitzer’s house in Wilton, she, Derek Dlouhy and Emily Smyers are preparing about 150 pairs a day for the debut of Biker Britches at the annual Sturgis Mississippi River Motorcycle Rally from June 17-20 in Davenport.
“For the show, we’ll have about 2,000 to showcase,” Smyers said.
Smyers, 28, was working at an executive search firm in Chicago when she was laid off in February. She will handle the marketing for Biker Britches.
Dlouhy, 25, was also working in Chicago and laid off in February from his job as a video game designer.
“The vision was to create jobs,” said Fitzer, 54. “We all needed a job. We decided, ‘How can we do something about it?’”
She incorporated the company in February. They first saw the finished product after buying a digital garment-printing machine at a trade show in March.
“We were truly excited. I was jumping up and down and giving Derek a big hug for the designs,” Fitzer said. “Once I saw that, I was like, ‘We’re in. We’re doing it.’”
Dlouhy has designed about 35 original graphics that include motorcycles, crosses or angel wings. Some include mantras such as “Wind Child,” “Free Spirit,” and “Live and Let Live.”
Fitzer hopes to to eventually have the underwear manufactured locally.
About a dozen different styles of underwear will be available, including boxer briefs for men, and hipsters, boy shorts, basic panties and thongs for women, said Smyers.
Each pair will cost up to $20, and can be purchased online.
Said Fitzer, “They just make you feel powerful, and make you smile.”
