PLEASE!.....Those are NOT "XR's" (they may be painted orange and black, and run counter clockwise, but that's where the similarity ends....) Very cool though, Dirt Track ("Flat Track" onthe other side of the pond) is really taking off in the U.K.!

RockyMt, what stock street bikes make a good dirt tracker? Displacement, twin, single? Or is it better to go with a dirt bike?

Depends on what class ya wanna race in. "Framers" are popular (using a CRF450 for example) change the wheels to 17's, re-valve the forks & shock, etc. Or you can usually pick up a "dedicated" short tracker (like a Champion or Knight framed Honda or Yamaha 500 single) fully sorted out with spares for $2500 to $3500 bucks. A GREAT platform for getting yer feet wet is an XR100 Honda with street tires, you'll get the hang of backin' the puppy in without the cost and speed of a bigger bike. I've had a few for years and helped dozens of guys get up to speed. Everything's the same, just happens slower so you can really feel whats goin' on. Initially you wont be able to run a big twin (at least in AMA) nor would you want to, unless you run in a vintage series. I'd also recommend against a 2 smoke to start out with, due to the peakier power delivery and lack of compression on deceleration making it harder to back in. Lemme know if you need more help/direction, I probably won't have the answer, but I'll know someone who does (so I'll still "appear" to be smart!)
Cheers,
-Rocky-

i have an XR100R and am very interested in starting to do mini-moto and/or dirt track....
i have a xr80r front wheel on mine, so i have two 16" tires front/back, and was looking at the Pirelli Diablo Scooter Tires for the xr?? what do ya think?, or should i go with more of a dual sport tire??
i wish there was a dirt oval near by but swank ass south florida apparently doesn't believe in fun...

That's a great response. Thanks RockyMt.
I'll be looking out for a XR100 and give it a try.

It really depends on what type of surface you're riding on (cushion, clay, pea gravel, etc.) I like to start people out on street tires so they get used to the bike moving around (a LOT!) Chen Sing et-al are good to start wirt with, letting go easily at relatively low speeds.

Gee, anyone remember the Bostroms and Scotty Zampachs battles in the old AMA Twin Sports series?

Very true, but you KNEW which rider had the biggest balls out on the track. I remember one race where Scotty Z lost a footpeg and was reaching down to hand shift his bike. IIRC he won or podiumed the damned thing
