OK Rocky I just finished the book...
In 1999 was Joey Dunlop's fastest lap ever at the IOM TT at 123.06 and
that was on the RC45... he could only manage 120.9 on the RC51...
Quote Bob McMillan
"Faced with a 14 second deficit with just one lap to go, Joey charged
to his fastest-ever TT lap at 123.06mph. Unfortunately, Jefferies went
fractionally quicker (123.26) on the R1 1000cc Yamaha to win by 15.8
seconds. This would be the closest Joey would come to victory all week."
"'The RC45 had been incredibly difficult to get right for The Island,' admitted
Bob McMillan, 'and we never had access to the full factory kit for those
TTs. But I think he'd have won on it in 1999 if we hadn't cocked up the pit
stop. He showed then that he still had it in him to win, but we let him
down. After that, I think he worked harder - mentally and physically -
building himself up for the 2000 IT.' At 47 years of age, and with ten more
IT wins than any man in history, Joey had little to prove."
Joey rejects the Fireblade I4...
Quote Bob McMillan:
"Before he got the SP-l, when it all looked like turning sour, Joey phoned me
from Ireland after riding what was more-or-less a proddy 929 Fire Blade. He
said Honda was being made to look a laughing stock. He was seriously
unhappy and took himself off to Donegal for three days. He was in no mood
to talk to anyone. Then he rang me. I'm on the M5, and my mobil phone
rings. It's Joey and he's seriously unhappy. 'I'll never forget it'. He said:
"This is supposed to be my last year and now it's ruined", because he
could see that the bikes he had then weren't capable of winning the
TT."
Joey's last rides...
"Joey took his 125, John Harris 600 and an RC45 lifted
from the ceiling of Joey's Bar where it had been on display,'
remembers -Sammy Graham numbly. -'The bikes were
loaded, with spares, a new primus stove, and tins of beans,
because 'when Joey got going he wouldn't stop, just make
himself something in the van."
I think Joey should be forever sitting high on his beloved RC45 instead of the RC51...
